Associated Press – 4/24/06:

In the nation’s capital, where parking is scarce, churchgoers say plans to crack down on double-parking infringe on their religious rights.

Worshipers held a rally Sunday afternoon urging officials to let them continue a practice that has long been overlooked.

The D.C. Department of Transportation was planning to hand out warning tickets this weekend and real tickets starting in July, but officials now say they’ll review the enforcement program.

Cars have commonly been double-parked near DC churches on Sundays for decades, but police had largely ignored the practice until neighbors complained.

At the rally, the church-goers blamed new high-rise developments.

  1. Gary Marks says:

Hmmm, when I used to go to church, we never had this problem because our cars always levitated. I guess these folks with the parking shortage should just pray harder.

  2. Gregory says:

Wait.. so they should get away with parking illegally because they are going to church? What? Take a bus, walk, car pool… ffs…

    Someone explain that to me….

  3. david says:

This is a problem where I used to live. Double-parked cars would block curb-side cars from 11am to 2pm, Sundays. I didn’t park my car there if I planned on using it during the time worshippers neglected lawful observance. For that guy out here who has a mother with asthma who insists that a 1000 to 1 odds that she will have an attack within those few hours of the whole week when his car is blocked I offer a contingency plan: call 911 and get an ambulance.

  4. RoeBoeDog says:

They have been doing this for Years in SF. You will have a five or four lane road choked down to one lane and then they want that one to be a sidewalk while they are getting in and out of their cars.

  5. RoeBoeDog says:

if there is a crazy new club the parking maids will be out in force, why are they not circling like they are around four o’clock when the parking lanes open up to driving lanes. Round them up, the church can cover the tickets.

  6. Kevin says:

    Isn’t there a commandment about this…
“thou shalt not double park on the sabbath”
    I think it’s number 11 or something
If it’s not in the bible already, someone should put it in there.

  7. SwampYankee says:

The simple reason that there is no parking, much less doubleparking, outside churhes and schools is fire engines can get there if there is a fire . So, you now have a building full of people, cars double parked outside, street proably partially blocked, and a fire breaks out blocking the worshipers in the church!! Let Jesus sort em out, they won’t help themselves, what can I do?

  8. Angel H. Wong says:

To hell with those bible thumpers, finally those preference days are over.

Let them pay just like the rest of the population. They like to discriminate but God forbids if they are not give preferential treatment.

  9. Bruce IV says:

Puh-lease. Its people like this who give the rest of us “Bible thumpers” a bad name – there is no religious right to double park your vehicles, or break any other government ordinence – the DC government had the right idea the first time, and they should have stuck to it.
