Stories of short supplies for American forces in Iraq, such as inadequate body armor or unshielded Hummers, have been around since the war began. CBS affiliate KHOU-TV in Houston has discovered that some soldiers were forced to ration water,
perhaps as little as 2-3 liters per day, because there was never enough.
It is less than the one gallon minimum a day that an Army manual says is necessary just to survive in a desert environment. In fact, an Army training document on preventing heat casualties states that water losses in the desert can reach 15 liters about four gallons a day per soldier.
Found by William Taylor.
Great… They’re probobly short because they’re haloburton 5 bucks a gallon for bottled water or something stupid like that. Too bad they cant use common sense have a a few aircraft carriers overproduce thier own water to supply the guys in the field. Nahhh that would make sense.
That is really a weak story. Basicly they quote a couple of enlisted guys and some ex-KBR employee.
Bad reporting. But what do expect from a local TV news guy even if the local is Houston?
Obama has rerouted all water to Afghanistan as an incentive to fight there.
This line sums up the war!
“They found plenty, in the hands of civilian contractors who Robey claims were supposed to be distributing it to soldiers.”
I saw a documentary about how the Israeli army trained its soldiers for desert duty prior to the 1967 Israeli-Arab war. Each soldier was to stop whatever they were doing once an hour and chug 1 litre of water, whether they needed it or not. This way, they stayed constantly hydrated. The documentary suggested that this was one of the reasons (among many) why they won.
If true, this really does surprise me. When I was there, and in Afghanistan, everywhere you go there was plenty of bottled water. At most bases, there would be a pallet or two sitting just inside the gate so you could grab a few extra bottles as you left on patrol. I suspect this may be an exaggeration of some spot shortages and not a widespread or continuing problem.
We are one step away from outsourcing the entire military.
We outsource everything from mess halls, to logistics, to interrogating prisoners. War is very profitable for companies like Halliburton, KBR and the rest. We pay retail for war costs.
If our military didn’t outsource everything to private industry things like this wouldn’t happen. Accountability would be built in, and there would be hell to pay.
I was taught that the English hiring Hessian mercenaries to fight us in the Revolutionary War was a shameful thing – and it was. Now look at us.
If a war is worth fighting, then our military should do it – and all the functions needed, as in the past.
Can’t get them to enlist? Then rethink the war.
WTF happened to our country??!!!
#7 – Damn. I wish they’d been outsourcing KP when I was in the Army!
Another Bush legacy of “support the troops”.
#9, you do know who is in charge now right? Obama has been in long enough to take over stuff like this. In short if the body armor problem was Bush’s fault then the water problem is Obama’s. You neo-libs can’t go on blaming Bush for everything when he is not longer in charge.
This report is BS. Obama is in charge and Iraq is great and the economy is heading up. Just ask him.
#10, Bob,
Read the effen article. This happened over the past few years, NOT during the current Administration.
Thanks for sharing…..
