Phuket, already banned from Britain

Independent Online Edition > Europe

More than 90 airlines were banned from landing at European airports yesterday as part of a plan to tighten safety and maintenance protection, after a spate of air disasters.

Regulators from the 25 EU countries, Norway and Switzerland agreed to pool information and prevent 92 airlines, most of which are based in Africa, from flying to any of their airports.

These are mostly crummy African carriers. It’s probably a good idea. The list of totally banned airlines is linked here.

  1. Jose says:

I would say its 80% their fault for the flying connfin status, and its 20% other carriers fault for selling these old airplanes to these airlines that can’t afford news ones to begin with

  2. gquaglia says:

I wonder how long before someone starts crying racism, since most are from Africa.

  3. ECA says:

considering the price of aircraft, you would THINK they would update or buy NEW every 10 years or do…
But even the USA has craft in the air that are getting past 20+ years old.

  4. name says:

All I can say is the Democratic Republic of Congo, Swaziland, Sierra Leone and Equitorial Guinea must be seriously booming nations! They have more airlines than Canada!

  5. GregAllen says:

I think I would have been Phuket Air just for the bad jokes alone!

  6. Kevin says:

All of the Congo airlines that I found in Google were associated with illegal smuggling activities, and the planes in the pictures were mostly prop jets. Not sure I’d want to be in the air next to one of them, or even on the same runway!

  7. Don says:

Phuket is actually pronounced poo-ket. Still, I’d like to hear some of those jokes.

  8. name says:

    Kevin,

You’re comment smacks of racism. Hows that gquaglia?

  9. Nik Carrier says:

I don’t think Kevin’s comments are racist in anyway. Congo is a brutal country run by feuding warlords that make other bad places in the world pale in comparison. I wouldn’t trust any company based in the Congo either. No reputable company would want to remain based there unless it was for illegal purposes. It has nothing to do with race. It’s just the reality of life in the Congo today.

  10. name says:

    Nik,

EASY buddy… As you can see from my comment, I was just helping gquaglia along…

  11. J.S. Scongilli says:

I was just glad that some countries are finally going to do something about Viktor Bout’s airlines.

  12. Mr. Fusion says:

I didn’t see Air America on the list. Does that mean Europe now considers illegal renditions safe for all passengers?

  13. Mike Cannali says:

I had a connection from Rome to London on Air Kenya in 1987 – true story – the back half of the airplane had chickens as cargo.
