I was amused by the liquor selection in Germany and was somewhat suprised to see this selection of Jim Beam including the Black label, the Green label and Jim Beam Rye, which I didn’t know existed. Look for Rye to become some sort of trendy booze in the years ahead.

Rye whiskey is actually made with rye and is similar to Canadian whiskey. It was a favorite of George Washington who actually distilled it himself.

If you want to class up the Rye action I’d suggest that this particular rare Rye linked here would be a good conversation starter.

During a heavy session in Cologne a few years ago, one of my partners in crime selected Johnny Walker Green Label.

Not being a whisky drinker I didn’t hold high expectations of it but when I tried it, it was great, very subtle and smooth.

I haven’t seen it anywhere since. Does it exist outside Germany?!?

bleah.. I dont like rye.. I cant stand scotch.. trendy or not.. I’ll stick with a good bourbon .. a good gin I like bombay sapphire.. or a good vodka..

I’ve been able to get Jim Beam Rye in Maryland, for several years. However the supply is limited and it’s not always on the shelf.

And yes, JB Rye is very similar to canadian whiskey.

  6. Robert says:

Real Canadian whiskey is rye whiskey but we don’t much use the term whiskey to talk about it. It’s just called ‘rye’ as opposed to ‘scotch’. Canadian Club is the most famous brand but we have many others. Very curiousand interesting to see a Jim Beam model. I wonder if it is sold in Canada, the natural home of rye drinkers. FYI, cheap rye and coke is the standard blue collar drink of Canada for those who don’t drink beer …

  7. RTaylor says:

Everyone in the South knows Tennessee distills the best whisky. Jack trumps Jim any day. 😉

  8. Abam says:

You can get it in Virginia without any problem. I’l have to stock up before it becomes trendy.

  9. JT says:

I have worked part time in a liquor store for awhile and we never sell much of the Rye. Maybe 1 every few months. I doubt it will become popular.

  10. Damon Rondeau says:

Yep — this Canadian verifies that the stuff Americans call “Canadian whisky” is rye whisky. We call it “rye” or “whisky”, never “Canadian whisky” or “rye whisky”. Rye and coke, rye and ginger ale — classic Canadian hosebag stuff.

Premium Canadian brands — brands Canadians actually drink themselves — include Gibson’ s Finest and Alberta Springs.

Personally I much prefer scotch, bourbon or Jack Daniel’s.

Alph. Yes You can find JW Green here and there. Costco had it during last Christmas. Most duty free stores carry it too. It’s the only pure Malt (not blended with neutral spirits) Scotch under the JW brand the company makes — that I know of. It’s essentially the leftover pure Malts that go into the normal blends which are all backed off by neutral spirits. I like the Green Label a lot and it’s a good deal.

  12. HoustonDavid says:

Rye is the spirit preferred by many for several famous whiskey cocktails — notably the Manhattan and the New Orleans favorite Sazerac. Aficionados tend to prefer the drier rye over the sweeter bourbon in these cocktails. In the US, Strait Rye Whiskey is required to be made from a mash of at least 51% rye grain.

My Grandfather was the only rye drinker I have ever known. He wouldn’t have anything else in the house. He was an old Italian immigrent, so not sure where he picked it up at.

I didn’t know JB had rye. I like it, I used to sneak from my Grand dad.

All my mates in England and Scotland like Jack Daniels.

  14. Kaz Imu says:

I never knew a green label Jim Beam has existed.

It’s the first time seeing it, and I can’t waste to have a sip of it.

Rye’s always been my favorite with it’s softness when gulped.
