KRT Wire | 03/12/2006 | Mexican drug cartel using Texas city as base — Why isn’t this bigger news?

LAREDO, Texas – This Texas border city is emerging as a staging ground for operations by the Sinaloa drug cartel, a clear indication that Mexico’s drug gangs are gaining a foothold on American soil, some U.S. and Mexican authorities say.

The cartel uses Laredo as a base to gather intelligence and weapons and to launch strikes against rivals, the authorities say. Cartel members also want to take advantage of the protection offered by the “softer justice” available on the U.S. side.

  1. Robert says:

Wow that freaky ..im only 8 hours from Mexico .. thats little close to Home .. only 30 minutes from Houston ..thats just sad. Bring the U.S Army and wipe them out would be good .not all Mexicans just the Mexico drug Cartel … later

  2. J.S. Scongilli says:

The reason its not bigger news is it might cause acton to secure the boarder with Mexico. This will not be allowed by the Administration, most of the Republicans and Democrats in Congress.

  3. Brenda Helverson says:

I was sentenced to live in Laredo in 1976 and learned more about the place than I ever wanted to. Unlike most other Border cities, the financial wealth of Laredo & Nuevo Laredo is on the Mexican side. Although Texas claims to have been under 6 flags (hence the amusement park name), Laredo and N.L. were under 7, including The Republic of the Rio Grande. That spirit continues, and Laredo is part of the United States in the loosest sense of the word.
