Here’s a quick look at the Game Developers Conference in SF this week. In case you wanted to see how crowded it was.
Below is a short video of the Arena Motion Capture software that I found fascinating. It and other software systems mark the end of actual animation.
The GDC also had a jobs fair that was crammed with companies and people looking for jobs. I do not think this part of the economy is suffering in any way. The video sucks because the aisles were just crammed with people.
Thanks for sharing John! I love watching these…
Pretty impressive attendance.
Almost half as crowded as a gun show!
All I saw were people playing video games and kids who wanted to know how to make video games without a college education.
Arena Motion Capture is actually fairly old hat. The feature film industry has been using it for over a decade.
#3,
You utterly fail to understand the entertainment business, and trade shows in general…
If I wanted to be a game developer, the way I would go about it is develop an idea for a game, write a demo, then go to a game show like this and pitch it to everyone who would listen to me.
If you were reasonably articulate, I bet the very least offer you would get is “we need someone like you on our team”. If only in a sales or PR job…
I donno… Thats why you go to trade shows… to meet people who are like you and have a “making money” agenda.
“It and other software systems mark the end of animation”
Is that like computers marking the end of paper?
ROFLI always get a laf when people make predictions.
[Yeah, like TV marked the end of movies. Har! – ed.]
John, I don’t understand how you were able to walk through there without being mobbed by all your fan. Didn’t he see you?:-) I bet you walked past that blonde at least 2 more times! Admit it!
It’s cool to get a glimpse of these things since I’ll probably never get to one. Thanks!
Kinda of sparse on the booth babes there.
#2 – Speaking of gun shows.
Stopped by a gun show on the spur of the moment.
Asked lady selling tickets what the admission fee was.
She said “Six dollars.”
Looked in my wallet to find seven dollars. I removed six and paid the admission. I then showed her the one remaining dollar in my wallet and said “You took all but my last dollar.”
She said “That’s more than most women would have left you.”

LOL! That’s good, and all too true!
#8 – Yeah, not many booth babes. It’s more for people in the industry than press stuff, which is always filled with them
“It and other software systems mark the end of actual animation.”
I love ya John, but that’s a head’n’knee-slapper
It’s hard to believe this has to be explained, but you’re presuming that the value of animation is a matter of mimesis. Watch “Princess Mononoke” and have a little re-think.
