A small-town judge with three wives was ordered removed from the bench by the Utah Supreme Court on Friday.
Steed has served for 25 years on the Justice Court in the polygamist community of Hildale in southern Utah, where he ruled on such matters as drunken driving and domestic violence cases.
The commission last year sought his removal from the bench after a 14-month investigation determined Steed was a polygamist and had violated Utah’s bigamy law.
Having wandered through tiny Hildale more than once, I doubt if anyone in town didn’t know the judge had 3 wives. So, after 25 years, it took 14 months worth of taxpayers’ dollars to figure it out. Baloney!
I laugh at those who say gay marriage will lead to polygamy. As if it isn’t already here!
Ah, but you miss the point, Milo. If gay marriage were legal, then plural marriage would also be legal. The judge was removed for committing a third degree felony — polygamy.
By the way, have you heard of any judges being removed for being gay?

Steed has a point though. The Utah Supreme Court would not rule on the constitutionality of the polygamy law. I think that might have been the wrong of the Court. That suggests that laws are superior to the Constitutions of both the U.S. and Utah. When the constitutionality of a law is questioned, that must be the first ruling by any jurist.
Why arent the christian right all over this? Dont they want to protect the sancity of marriage? I Think polygamy is wronger than gay marriage and should be dealt with swiftly. I For got sin was selective to the right….

As a resident of Utah, MOST of the polygamy cases involve UNDERAGE girls, NOT consenting adults.
And by the time they ARE adult, the children have been brainwashed (like ALL religions do) to essentially think polygamy is required by god.
For any action between consenting adults, or “children” who think as well, or better, than so-called “adults’, I say “Go for it!”.
Problem is, there is NO quick-test to find out who has the brains or emotions to handle adult activities.
So, all anybody can do is hope those with the guns will actualy try to enforce the laws.

I too live in Utah, and can say that no one here really cares about this story.
Everyone knows this stuff goes on here, and as long as kids aren’t getting hurt everyone turns a blind eye.

The polygamy law is ridiculous. If three people want to live as a family, raise children and be happy doing so… that should be their choice. It may be even a better choice than current customs… if you were to be in a two woman, one man family and one of the women is business-oriented and wants to work, and the other is not and wants to be a housewife and raise kids, then one can go to work and the other can happily watch (and raise) the kids. It is still a dual income household, which is almost necessary these days, and everybody benefits.

Having lived in Arizona, I can remember the news stories of all the small towns close to the Arizona/Utah border being hotbeds of polygamy. In a few cases the wives were underage and it was noting more than an old or middle aged man preying on young girls.
But, in most polygamous marriages that isn’t the case. Every now and then the authorities get a burr under their saddles and start going after these folks, but nothing ever happens unless underage coercion is involved.
Basically,what this amounts to ,is pornagamy.I don’t see these older men marrying widows to ensure an iheritance for the widows’ children as was an Old -Testament law in Isreal.(Book of Ruth)
Instead,the good ol boys reach for the youngest girls they can find.Hiding behind religion and state laws or lack thereof ,they make thier fantasies come true.The marriages are a lie.They avoid mental growth with any one female.Thus the young ones marry a philosophy just as much as they marry the man and become sex slaves .
Why the moral magority doesn’t attack lies in relationships is beyond me.Satan is the author of lies and confusion.There is far more lying in television than sex.How much more could we do for the minds of our youth if we attacked lies in government and in the media.
This is about a lot more than “simple” polygamy and personal choice. Do a google on Hildale and FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints) and you’ll find the scoop on Warren Jeffs and his sicko gang who run what is basically a cult based on child-bride trading in the name of a church. Due to a lot of recent national publicity (brought on in part by, of all people, Dr. Phil!!) the state of Utah is finally no longer able to turn a blind eye to this guy. A whole lot more is involved here: boys who are kicked out of the cult and made homeless, to reduce competition for the old guys who want to add to their kiddie-bride collection; a huge increase in the number of kids with a debilitating condition called fumarase deficiency due to the massive amount of inbreeding going on in Hildale, Colorado City, Eldorado and other places; an entire generation of brain-washed families… I hope they nail the whole lot of ’em. The sooner the better.
