ALLISON SHELLEY/THE WASHINGTON TIMES REWARDED: Postmaster General John E. Potter received a compensation package totaling more than $800,000 for fiscal 2008.
Congress will hold a hearing next month into why Postmaster General John E. Potter has gotten a nearly 40 percent pay raise since 2006 and was awarded a six-figure incentive bonus last year, even as the U.S. Postal Service faces a multibillion-dollar shortfall that threatens a day of mail delivery. “Last year, the Postal Service took a loss of nearly $3 billion and recommended that the public take austere cuts in service to allow it to operate, including cutting a day of mail delivery and raising the price of stamps,” Rep. Stephen F. Lynch, Massachusetts Democrat, said Friday.
On Tuesday, The Washington Times reported that Mr. Potter had received nearly 40 percent in pay raises since 2006 and about $135,000 in incentive bonuses last year. For fiscal 2008, including increases to the value of his two pensions, Mr. Potter’s entire compensation package totaled more than $800,000, according to Postal Service financial records. In addition to executive compensation, members will review the Postal Service’s economic troubles and competitiveness, officials said. Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, the subcommittee’s ranking Republican, said he, too, questions the timing of the big pay packages, given the Postal Service’s financial woes.
“On the surface it just doesn’t smell right,” Mr. Chaffetz said. “Rewarding people for performance is acceptable, but things kind of seem to be going in the wrong direction. I’m looking forward to that hearing.” Among other top postal officials, Deputy Postmaster Patrick Donahoe got $600,026 in total compensation, more than half of which was an increase to the value of his retirement annuities. His base salary was $238,654.
Wow….who knew?
In other news Congress questions own pay raises,
then opts for pay cuts during recession to set an example.
#1, Gov,
We wish.
Now let us compare this to Fedex & UPS CEO compensation packages …Gulp.. Did I read $23 MILLION? But hey, It’s more fun to bash the post office!

‘Yes we can’
When you control the mail you control information. – Newman
I’m a CEO. I deserve the extra pay for the hard work that I do. It does not matter how the accounting looks for my company, I want that extra income in these tough times.
Oh since we don’t have the money the vast majority of workers will not get that cost of living adjustment this year.
He got that money by CHEATING the people that work for the Post office and have been injured by denying proper claims and care, by not allowing them due justice and forcing them to attempt to fill out endless forms that are nothing more than a trap to land them in Federal court so that they can be let go and not allowed to speak or receive any benefits, the same as the Department of Labor is screwing the soldiers that are putting their lives on the line in other countries and treated like less than the evil that they fought…
Money Talks, and BULLSH*T walks…
Congress questions its own lifetime pension with full medical coverage.
I wish.
…Patrick Donahoe got $600,026 in total compensation, more than half of which was an increase to the value of his retirement annuities.
Are these tied to markets? Also makes me wonder if the numbers were crunched by the same people who brought us $70/hr UAW workers.
#7, I agree. Zack and Mira makes a Porno had a small snippet similar to what you just outlined
#9, even if $70/hr is not accurate the rate is MUCH higher than regular people in the same position. Even Boeing union workers don’t get as much as auto workers. Why people are still debating whether or not these auto union workers are getting so much is beyond me. They are. If you don’t believe the numbers go and find out yourself, in person. I’ve worked in the various industries (not medical) to know how much they are getting.
Im waiting for them to question the Vets hospital HEAD, wages..
#9, Mr. Baggins,
Very astute observation sir.
They won’t actually do anything.
#10, The,
even if $70/hr is not accurate the rate is MUCH higher than regular people in the same position.
You don’t care how much an auto worker earns, you, and your ilk, only want to bash someone.
Even Boeing union workers don’t get as much as auto workers.
So what?
If you don’t believe the numbers go and find out yourself, in person.
Why don’t you? You haven’t posted any numbers for us to believe or disbelieve. All you was get wishy washy about the claimed autoworker’s wages.
Why is he being paid that much?!
Anyways most of us get “paper spam” only.
I want to prevent USPS from delivering anything at all to my address, but guess what: you just can’t do it!
Dissolve USPS now!
#14, I work in the various industries. I’ve worked in semi-conductor, electro-mechanical and aerospace and know how much the regular/average Joe gets paid. I hire quite a few myself setting the pay rate.
What’s the point of me posting more numbers when you refute every single one from any source because you think it’s not right. Even this discussion is pointless with you because you aren’t going to do anything to support your own opinions. Where are YOUR numbers? And I expect you to have figures and numbers for EVERY comment you make. Hey, your own guideline..just make sure you keep to your own words.
I hope you all know that the US post office is NOT a part of the gov..
#17…
It’s not suppose to be a Government entity but, it is… Ask any Postal worker where they report anything to, ask them who governs them, and for a real shock ask them what happens if they get hurt on the job..!! I know several individuals that were in accidents and could not get health care because hospitals and doctors won’t accept them… Reason: The GOVERNMENT won’t pay their bills..!! One individual went to two hospitals and three clinics after being hit by a car and could not get treatment due to the Government not being responsible… He had to go home and then claim he was hurt at home to get care..!! The forms they fill out are Government Forms, they report to the Department of Labor… So tell me how they are not a part of the Government… One lady is now losing her home and hasn’t been paid after waiting two years for surgery and now is being charged with a FEDERAL crime for accidentally putting the wrong date on a form and checking the wrong box while on medication…
No I do not work for USPS nor the Government, just an observer who is sick of seeing what our precious Government is doing to its own workers…

You haven’t posted any numbers for us to challenge. Nor have I posted anything except to challenge your comment about autoworkers being paid more than Boeing employees. Instead of backing up that statement, you go off on a tirade about I didn’t back up what I said.
I don’t care where you worked. That is a Cow-Patty style claim. It has been my experience that people who claim something because they have experience, usually don’t.
# 17 ECA said, “I hope you all know that the US post office is NOT a part of the gov”
Wrong. http://usgovinfo.about.com/blpostalservice.htm
#20, Paddy-O
ECA is mostly correct. The Post Office is independent. The government function involves the owners and oversight happens to be the Congress. It is however, not controlled by Congress the same as the Park Service or NASA are.
But you have a point. Wear a hat and no one will notice.
# 21 Mr. Fusion said, “ECA is mostly correct.”
Except, that by statute it is a gov’t agency with a police force having federal law enforcement powers.
So, yes, other than being almost completely wrong, he’s correct.
The Post Office does have their own secret police and they do have Federal Law Enforcement Power… Including WireTapping..!! They are called Postal Inspectors but, they have the Power and Love to use it…
18,
and the problem comes with the POST OFFICE being NOT the gov, but controlled by the gov.
