There’s an apparent labor dispute in Berkeley where the Union members dolled up a big inflatable rat with a Santa hat, ornaments and tinsel. The unions used to be a lot tougher when I was a kid.

Somebody once called religion a crutch for the weak minded. I disagree with this. Unions are a crutch for the weak minded. From what I can tell we really need the unions more than ever. The unions don’t need to be tough. They just need to convince people they are powerless, which is a pretty easy sell these days. We still have a big steelworkers union here in the rust belt. They continue to organize stuff like the rubber industry and local government services.

In April 1998, USWA Local 164 workers at Titan’s manufacturing plant in Des Moines, Iowa, called a strike that lasted 40 months, a rubber industry record. USWA Local 1949 2A, which represents about 24 city employees, including utility billing personnel is in rust belt Ohio. Government is the new industry around here and it’s organized. Higher taxes anybody? We had some local police in the Teamsters. There were rumors about police corruption so the politicians broke up the police department. They didn’t want any competition.
