Netcraft: Web Server Survey Archives — Interesting data. Summary: Apache is killing the competition when it comes to web servers.

    FUNNY PR SPIN
When you take the TOC into account, this is why Apache is more expensive. There’s less demand, so Microsoft can offer you a better price. We build better toys too and less of them. Nobody wants our stuff and everbody needs our stuff. Good luck finding it, we are smarter than you! Ho ho ho!

  2. I wouldn’t think it was anything different — those of us who have moved to the standards crowd, and lean more towards PHP/MySQL or XML goodness, have always viewed Apache as the better way to fly. ASP is a dying breed — it has it’s place, but not by much.

  3. Apache isn’t more expensive, dip — run a Linux or Mac OS X server someday, and you’ll laugh at your Windows 2003 creation when it comes to web hosting.

  4. Even if I were completely ignorant of all other reasons to use Apache, I’d still choose it because of one little name… “.htaccess”

I’m just surprised that the market share for “Other” isn’t higher. It’s been my experience that using Apache for dynamic content and thttpd for static content (eg. images) blows all other setups out of the water.

Did anyone actually read the results?

“The December survey sees momentum continue to shift in the web server market, where Microsoft gained 463K sites, … while Apache … had a net decline of 903K. Windows servers also outpaced Apache in active sites for the third straight month, during which it has lifted its market share in active sites by 4.1 percent to 24.4 percent.”

“ASP is a dying breed”… Uhmm… okay. How is it a dying breed if IIS is gaining marketshare? Now there are statistics showing .Net has more marketshare than Java… Sure sounds like Microsoft is going under…

Apache is a great webserver, no arguments here. But come on guys, IIS 6 is pretty good product.
