The Honda Civic has captured Motor Trend magazine’s “Car of the Year” award, the publication for auto enthusiasts announced Tuesday.
The magazine said that it is giving the award to the Civic for all four of its new models.
“Honda deserves a standing ovation for not playing it safe again,” said a statement from Angus MacKenzie, Motor Trend editor-in-chief. “With the sizzling Si, a sleek coupe, an elegant sedan and a Hybrid that averages 50 miles per gallon, each model shines through with what Motor Trend looks for when crowning Car of the Year.”

How many people have stories of Honda’s lasting forever and day? Many years ago, a friend mine’s dad was a Honda auto mechanic. He eventually switched to GM cars because he could not get enough business with Honda. My sister once bought a used Honda Civic that had 80,000 miles on it. She added another 150,000 miles and sold it for more than she bought it.
I have a 1996 Honda Civic with 230K on it. Biggest issue so far has been a faulty starter (replaced it and everything was dandy again).
My first Honda was my dad’s first Honda. In 1982, after reading Consumer Reports, my dad put his name on a waiting list for a brand new ’83 Honda Civic Sedan. 6 months later, it was delivered. By 1990, I was driving. I bought my first car, an ’83 Pontiac J2000 (later known as the Sunbird). It only had 27,000 miles on it. My dad convinced me it was the right car at the right price, but I had my doubts. After spending more in repairs than I bought it for, it had a “massive and sudden” oil failure (I think the filter came off) and we decided to rebuild the engine wasn’t worth the effort. I inherted the Civic (my dad felt guilty he pushed me into the Sunbird) and he got a new ’92 Civic. Suffice to say, I put another 100K on the it before retireing it for a Civic of my own. I can’t wait to get my hands on the new Si!
This story and the GM story are good examples on how the Japanese are on the cutting edge when it comes to cars and that the American companies simple don’t get it. I have only owned 1 American car and after the engine blew at 40,000 miles I have never owned another one.
This car reminds me of the first time I saw a Datsun 240Z. I want one.
I think the new Honda Civics are totalling a nice looking and good driving car. I only wish the price was a little cheaper. But, you can’t have it all.
