This is Chery’s upscale “Oriental Son”

General Motors Corp. and its major South Korean subsidiary have reached an out-of-court settlement with China’s Chery Automobile Company Limited in an intellectual property dispute over the design [and naming] of small vehicles.

Malcom Bricklin, Chery’s American partner, said the agreement clears the way for a smoother introduction of the newly designed, Chinese-made vehicles in the US, starting in 2007. GM had objected to the use of the Chery name because its too much like Chevrolet or Chevy, which has been GM’s top selling brand for eight decades.

I was going to ask Bricklin’s company if they would run a contest for a new name for the cars. Unfortunately, their 800# is out of order. Their direct# works. Only the electric receptionist answers. Not a surprise on a weekend.

I emailed the addresses listed for their publicist — and they were returned as undeliverable. One of the principals of that firm also lists a blog — which hasn’t been updated since August — and a “political” chat which I never found.

I remember the Bricklin sports car which was earlier than DeLorean — and better [sort of]. Bricklin started Subaru USA and left before it got really successful. He also imported the Yugo.

Mmm… I thought part of the problem was that the cars looked nearly identical to some GM cars.

    I guess they wised up.

This just in, GM to cut 30,000 jobs, that’s 9% of its workforce! Merry Christmas.

  3. Alberto Vildosola says:

Americans, and westerners in general, keep sleeping in front of Chinese invasion. While targeting at N. Korea or Syria (it seems that Iraqui swamp is not enough), they bow before the most powerful Communist and dictatorial country in the planet, which is happening to become the first superpower too. Americans must think carefully about this: right now America depends on all sort of Chinese supplies and manufacturies, more than China depends on American technology or financial power. Matter of fact is, China is the country with the biggest share of cash, real dollars, in the planet. In the other side, America is the country with the biggest debt.
While spending billions chasing mexicans, haitian or cuban illegal inmigrants, which all of them happen to be americans and westerners too, anyone who looks around can see how the chinese presence is rising everyday in American streets, and don’t forget this:
per every chinese person you see walking on the street, there are another ten hiding in a basement, working as modern slaves to pay for the travel costs to chinese maffia … or government?

As an ABC, I wouldn’t buy a thing that is mass-produced in China @ this moment. Seen the quality control in some of the products. It sucks big time. However, my associates are contemplating in buying a BMW customized in Germany. [LoL].

@ the same time, why are the US masses buying more stuff from a country that will destory our economy in 20 yrs?

A note to Alberto Vildosola, there is no such thing as Chinese Mafia. Just Chinese Benevolent Associations. …

  5. Pat (not Patrick) says:

Bricklin has been a huckster for many years. He persuaded the Canadian and New Brunswick governments into investing in a Canadian designed and built car for the masses, back in the 1970s. Only it was the Bricklin sports car that came off the line. After horrendous quality issues, production problems, suspect accounting, and mounting debts, the New Brunswick government finally pulled the plug. You might find an old Bricklin on eBay. I would only buy one if I was not going to drive it and only wanted it for nostalgia.

&, in addition to Alberto’s good points, China & Russia are combining their armies. Together, they have more nukes than the USA. ABout 16,000+ to 14,000 for the USA. They are also going around making friends with the USA’s enemies & to add insult to injury, are making deals with US cash streaming into their coffers!
