A gamer who spent £13,700 on an island that only exists in a computer game has recouped his investment, according to the game developers. The 23-year-old gamer known as Deathifier made the money back in under a year.

The virtual Treasure Island he bought existed within the online role-playing game Project Entropia.
He made money by selling land to build virtual homes as well as taxing other gamers to hunt or mine on the island.” extract from BBC news online, Wednesday, 9 November 2005.

You know a market has reached a high level of self awareness when it profits without actually having to exchange anything tangible.

  1. Miguel Lopes says:

I’d like to know what economists have to say about this sort of stuff…

  2. Luís Camacho says:

If I had £13,700 I would be rich!
    RICH DAMN IT!

  3. Jon says:

Hell with what economists have to say about this sort of stuff; let’s see what psychiatrists have to say about this sort of stuff….

  4. James Hill says:

Does anyone actually play this game? Does anyone know anyone who plays this game?

I ask because this is the third story like this I’ve read in a month, and I’ve yet to come across someone who’s even installed the product. Is it mostly a European population on this game? What’s the point of the game?

This sounds a hell of a lot like the paid ads on at 3:30 AM telling you to buy lots of property so you can be rich like the other losers who bought a lot of property.
