Republican leaders are discussing the future of the Republican Party in Miami. What do you think?

  1. LtSiver says:

If the republican party continues to allow the neo-con nut jobs who want to take civil liberties away and force people to do what the neo-con’s church tells them to force on people, then no, the republican party will go the way of the Whigs.

  2. Les says:

    #29,
hate to disagree, but they lost because of GWB.

They could have run George Washington and still lost.

  3. Paddy-O says:

    # 33 Les said, “They could have run George Washington and still lost.”

And, the Dems could have run a candidate with less executive acumen than most people on this blog possess and, still have won.

    Oh, wait.

  4. LotsaLuck says:

I realize that most of the cool kids here are waaaay anti-Republican in general and anti-conservative in particular.

Why, then should anybody give a rip what they think the Republican party should do?

I’m old enough to remember 1994, when the R’s ‘took over’ both chambers of the legislature in Washington. I don’t recall the media sounding the death knell for the Democrats, or reporters scouring the halls to find Republicans with advice for the Democratic party.

What worked for the D’s was to accentuate their liberal base – this is arguably the most liberal House, Senate, and President (elect) we’ve had in a long, long time. Has Charlie, Katie, or Brian made a big deal about this? How about Jay, Dave or Conan?

On the other hand, we’re already hearing about how terribly terribly terrible it would be if conservatives actually took over what used to be the conservative (i.e. anti-liberal) party.
And social conservatives! Gasp! They’re the worst! What with their belief in God and heterosexual marriage and no abortions and what-not!

The R’s need to figure out how to pursue their base without apology AND pick off moderate and conservative Democrats who are appalled by what are sure to be ultra-liberal policy excesses of the newly empowered D’s.

A new ‘Contract With America’ might help.

  5. pcsmith says:

    Stop kowtowing to fundamentalist religions.

You can be moral without being religious.

  6. Hyph3n says:

What they should so is return to “the stingy old men with your money” issues and dump the social issues. But the religious right is to deeply ingrained into the party for that to happens.

So, instead they should take the mobster approach… any politician associated with Bush should be k… er, escorted out of power. In time, this war will be over and the budget will stabilize, then the Republicans can return again and start the whole thing over.

As for the ‘Contract With America’, it was great PR at the time, but what did it accomplish?

  7. GregA says:

    #37,

It made Bill Clinton the most popular president in living history, and triggered what we now call the netroots, or the very early version of it. Interestingly enough, those earliest version of the netroots were hosted by Perkel. Iirc, the first political “Bloggers” were Rackjite and Bartcop.

  8. Paddy-O says:

    # 37 Hyph3n said, “As for the ‘Contract With America’, it was great PR at the time, but what did it accomplish?”

It accomplished a budget where less was spent by the gov’t than was collected. Despite Clinton not having it on his “agenda”.

Overall, Clinton + Gingrich were the best combo in a LONG time.

  9. The Monster's Lawyer says:

    who gives a shit?

  10. Breetai says:

If they continue to include anymore of the religious BS I’m officially switching to a capital L Libertarian. What the hell happened to the party of fiscal responsibility and smaller government?! Right now there’s only one guy in congress promoting the concept. Is everybody a freaking imperialist now?

BTW

  12. Cursor_ says:

Return it to the party that Lincoln knew.

    Cursor_

  13. JimD says:

GOP soon to be SELLING PENCILS ON THE STREET CORNERS since they have just finished ENGINEERING ***WORLD WIDE REPUBLICAN DEPRESSION II*** !!! Way to go Repukes !!! DESTROY THE ECONOMY AND LEAVE TWO NO-WIN WARS FOR THE ADULTS TO CLEAN UP !!!

  14. Paddy-O says:

    # 43 Cursor_ said, “Return it to the party that Lincoln knew.”

Don’t know about that. Lincoln started a war over some states wanting to leave the Union (not against the Constitution) resulting in ~700,000 dead.

Not really what we need. Consider that we recently backed states that wanted to break with their own countries…

  15. Pagon says:

#27 – “The Repugnicans need to just realize they’re a huge failure to everyone except the rich and elite 1%.”

Actually, their party leaders and elected officials have known that since 1896.

It’s the ordinary people, who bought into their BS since Gingrich and Reagan, that have to learn that lesson – and teach it to their children. I never understod how “wage earners” could swallow that tripe.

Oh Wait! All it took was: Gays! Abortion! Religion! Fear! Commies under the bed!

  16. Rabble Rouser says:

Uhh, the graphic on the OP is incorrect.

The stars in the OFFICIAL Republican Party’s logo have the “point” of the five pointed star facing down. All you have to do is go over to their website to see.

That being said, the “upside down” five pointed star is the Sigil of Baphomet, the official symbol of the Church of Satan! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigil_of_Baphomet

They have THREE of them on their logo!!!

That should tell you something about the republicans. And I am not even going to get into the meaning of the elephant being an ancient weapon of war.

  17. paddler says:

I think they should sell it and give all the money back to their investors

  18. Arpie says:

The Republican party has a huge case of split personality, and that’s why they failed in the last election.
They don’t know if they’re neo-conservatives, plain old conservatives, libertarians or religious conservatives.
You can’t be all of the above, they are irreconcilable. You can’t have small government and also want to impose your values on other people, add crap to the constitution, or start stupid wars.

  19. QB says:

Does anyone really care? All I hope is that Sarah Palin runs again so Tina Fey can come back to SNL.

  20. Grandpa says:

Disband it and throw most of them in jail where they belong. They have traitored our jobs overseas and should be tried for treason and punished according to the law. We wouldn’t be in this economic mess we are in if it weren’t for their rush to help China. Perhaps a serious investigation into campaign financing from China is in order?

  21. Li says:

Something like that, if current trends continue. Forget about third parties, it’s time for a new second party.

  22. Paddy-O says:

    # 51 Grandpa said, “They have traitored our jobs overseas …”

    Like with NAFTA?

  23. pendrake says:

The ascent of Republican party was a marketing success, an example of defining the argument in their favor. It was always more about winning the game than it was about governing. Because as soon as they won, their first priority was enriching themselves while scuttling oversight. It was always about power and greed and never otherwise. They had their run. May they wander in the desert for 40 years.

  24. QB says:

I think I’ve linked this before but here is a pretty good article on the history of the right from the 1960’s to their current woes.

  25. deowll says:

    Future?

They have to start saying what people want them to say.

It might be nice if they even tried to do right by the people that do support them.

  26. Rick Cain says:

Republicans should be content with their voting bloc, rich white old men and angry young white poor racist men.

  27. Traaxx says:

3rd party, a Nationalist Party, enough said. I predict a Nationalist Party would stomp both Demoncrats and Repulicrats in the earth. That’s why both parties, and media allies, destroy anyone that happens to try.

    Traaxx

  28. JimD says:

    # 47 Rabble Rouser, Gee, I though those were BULLET HOLES !!! After the last election, the Repuke Elephant is just about to expire !!!
