Today’s environmentally-conscious people are thinking of ways to stay green even after they’re gone.
Eternal Reefs is putting a new spin on the at-sea burial by offering an environmentally-friendly alternative to cremation and traditional cemetery burials. The company offers a way to have a memorial and help out the environment at the same time, by creating a memorial reef that contains the ashes of the deceased. The memorial reefs are known as “reef balls.” They are constructed by mixing cremated remains with liquid concrete, which is put into mold in order to create the reef ball.
The reef ball is placed alongside other reef balls to create an artificial reef that provides a habitat for sea life. Within a few weeks, marine life will begin to take hold in the artificial reef, which will look like a natural reef within a few months. It creates a living legacy that is a unique way to memorialize someone who has passed. The memorial reef offers a unique option to traditional cremation urns and cemetery burials, which can have negative impacts on the environment.
The artificial reefs actually help rebuild the ocean’s ecosystem, allowing life to flourish.
Eternal Reefs will provide you with the exact latitude and longitude of where the reef is placed so you can visit by boat or scuba dive to the memorial. The memorials are placed along the East Coast of the U.S. The cost of a memorial reef ball ranges from $2,495 and $6,495, not including the cost of cremation. Eternal Reefs also offers memorial reefs for pets.
Maybe not as crazy as it sounds, though visiting your “departed” family could be a bit of a hassle, or fun depending.
This is ancient…
Remember seeing this on a Nat Geographical or so, last century.
I’ve had reef balls protecting the beach in front of my house in the Grand Caymans for several years now. My knees are ripped up swimming over these things and I crushed my nuts once or twice. I’ll try and post some pictures.
Sounds like your wife would still be able bust your balls when she’s gone Ed. 😉
#2. I’ll have my without nuts please.
An environmentally-friendly “alternative” to cremation? As useful as these balls may be, this just goes to reinforce the saying that there is a sucker born every minute.
Can someone please explain to me why we put so much effort and planning into disposing of our Earthly forms when we are done with them? To me this idea seems expensive, but so are traditional burial methods.
#6 – You are so right about that Ben. I think when we die we should be taken to a land fill and run through a wood chipper. We cremated my mother (who I wasn’t fond of) earlier this year and they got all freaked out because I donated 5 gallons of gas.
Dirty Jobs just had a show on “BARF” aka Bio Available Raw Food (or something like that. They grind up all the guts of cows and make it into nutritious dog food. We should do the same with cadavers. Don’t know if dogs would like it, but surely cats would.
#7 “We cremated my mother (who I wasn’t fond of) earlier this year and they got all freaked out because I donated 5 gallons of gas.”
Was she dead yet?
[LOL -ed.]
Looks like a highly profitable scam.
#10 – Better idea than putting old tires or broken down cars in the water… both of which break down in salt water over time and pollute the environment.
Environmentalism: Don’t judge us on our past, just our intent.
#9 – Yes, deader than shit. The funeral home sent me a letter to authorize cremation. They warned in the letter that cremation was permanent and irreversible (well, duh!). I called them up and told them I just couldn’t decide. I asked them if they could cut her in half and just do like, the bottom half? They hung up on me.
#12 – LMAO!
Special Ed… so right! When I cremated my dad, the bastard tried to sell me an expensive coffin… to get burned in! What a friggin’ waste of money and trees.
The cheapest thing I was allowed to do, by California law, was to buy a $200 cardboard box from the bastard. I couldn’t even bring my own box. What a scam…
Regarding this burial… you can buy a bag of ready-mix concrete at Home Depot for $2. Why not make your own “reef ball”?
#12 ROFL!
#14 – That would have been a waste of concrete. As it was they cremated her, called me and asked what to do with the ashes. I suggested a dumpster. I said if the have any accident on the way that I had a Dust Buster. Yeah, dear old mom <rolls eyes.
Why cremate the bodies first?
When I first heard of it I thought they just dumped the dead bodies under water in one of those cages. That would have been a lot cooler. This would have been a lot greener too. The amount of energy taken to cremate a body is quite a lot.
#2 – Please spare us the pictures of your nuts.
I’m still having trouble figuring out how this is a good environmental thing to do????? First the energy used for cremation, as was mentioned. But then you’ve got the energy used to transport the ashes to these guys and the energy they use to mix the concrete and transport it out to sea.
How can anyone who indulges this stupidity consider themselves environmentally conscious????
The folks who used the word “scam” have it right, I’m thinking.

You could have gone for the eco-friendly solution… now, that probably cost a lot of money, so here’s the DIY:
1. Insulate the trunk of your car.
2. Put the corpse in the trunk.
3. Fill the trunk with liquid nitrogen.
4. Run the car up and down a bumpy dirt road…
Voilà… done!
18 – Man, that is way cool! I’m jotting that down in my notebook!
Here are my nuts: http://tinyurl.com/5afjsg

#25, Ed,
I know a guy that got kicked so hard in the butt he blows his nose with toilet paper.
Then there was the bully that told me he would punch me so hard my asshole would have overbite. I couldn’t help but laugh. He ended up laughing too and the whole situation was diffused over a few tokes.
Good times.
#26, sorry to see your tourette’s syndrome isn’t getting any better.
Fusion, please get your retarded son JimD some help.
I didn’t know I got you pregnant when I was raping you in these threads, Fusion, but did you really have to shit out that?
Fusion, I met James Hill’s parent. They are a couple of nice guys.
