A 43-year-old Japanese woman whose sudden divorce in a virtual game world made her so angry that she killed her online husband’s digital persona has been arrested on suspicion of hacking, said police.

The woman, who is jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his identification and password to log onto popular interactive game “Maple Story” to carry out the virtual murder in mid-May, a police official in northern Sapporo said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

“I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry,” the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.

The woman had not plotted any revenge in the real world, the official said.

She has not yet been formally charged, but if convicted could face a prison term of up to five years or a fine up to $5,000.

Why can’t she pay her fine in “Mesos”?

Are the governments of the world putting “stupid” pills in the water supply? This is just frakking crazy.

  2. Paddy-O says:

I guess this is no worse than than taxing virtual game world income…

  3. brendal says:

Now I know it’s the end of the world…

  4. Steve Jibs says:

So she used his name and password to kill him in-game?

That’s not hacking you fucking twats. That’s a man stupid enough to give someone his account info.

He deserves whatever happens to his account if he gave out that information.

  5. sargasso says:

Japanese women are so hot when they’re angry.

  6. McCullough says:

So put her in a virtual prison, and throw away the virtual key, virtually for life.

    Mindless idiots.

She didn’t have permission to do what she did. It’s like give your girlfriend the key to you place. But after you break up she come back and strips the place bare. She would even have this right if you didn’t break up. Of course the guy is a dumb ass for not changing the lock/password.

  8. Jeremy Pyne says:

Apparently Maple Story is serious business. I had a roommate who has a similar think happen in the game, breakup with a boyfriend, and she actually brute-forced his account to get revenge. No new link as she wasn’t prosecuted sadly. Interesting though that there are no reports of simpler incidents in other MMO’s.

  9. troublemaker says:

Do you IDIOTS even bother to read these stories before commenting on them?

As is typical for this stupid website, and it’s writers penchant for misleading headlines, she was NOT jailed for killing a digital persona. She WAS jailed for HACKING.

    Morons…

  10. Mr. Fusion says:

I like the throwing her into a virtual prison for a virtual life time right after a virtual trial before a virtual jury.

Too bad she didn’t hack anything, moron.

  12. xerxus says:

I think this is analogous to having someone delete a document/story you’ve been working on for months or possibly years… and you don’t have a backup.

Not sure why this is spun into some absurd situation.

  13. i don’t know how it can be called hacking. Stolen identity at most because she logged in with his credentials. But if they were really close and virtually married then I’m sure they would have exchanged information at some point.
