Aid Offers Will Be Accepted From Countries— The headline on the news site itself is curious since this is an article about how we are rejecting all offers of International help regarding New Orleans. Very strange. I post this specifically because numerous commentators here seem to think that the whole world has been ignoring this situation. Read the papers!

With offers from the four corners of the globe pouring in, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has decided “no offer that can help alleviate the suffering of the people in the afflicted area will be refused,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Thursday.

However, in Moscow, a Russian official said the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency had rejected a Russian offer to dispatch rescue teams and other aid.

Offers have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States, the spokesman said.

Also, the Singapore embassy said the Southeast Asian country was sending three Chinook helicopters with 38 air force personnel from military exercises in Texas, to Louisiana to support relief efforts by the Texas National Guard.

Here is the kicker:

Still, Bush told ABC-TV: “I’m not expecting much from foreign nations because we hadn’t asked for it. I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars. But this country’s going to rise up and take care of it.”

“You know,” he said, “we would love help, but we’re going to take care of our own business as well, and there’s no doubt in my mind we’ll succeed.”

In, other words, we’re too proud and important to take any help from the “likes of you!”

Now can someone explain the Washington Post Headline to me? Soft-balling the reality of the situation.

  1. TwelveTwo says:

    Hmm, pride?

  2. Dan says:

“maybe some will send cash dollars”

Unless of course, they live in a foreign country and don’t have dollars!

  3. Dan Moutal says:

The news in Vancouver Canada is reporting that we will be sending emergency personnel to help out…

It would be a shame is a single person dies due to the US being to proud to accept help from others.

  4. agile says:

Because of the budget deficit, Congress’ relief package will of course be borrowed money from…

  5. fooz says:

funny how you altered Bushs quote, it should read
“You know,” he said, “we would love help, but we’re going to take care of our own business as well, and there’s no doubt in my mind we’ll succeed. ”
removing “as well” sure changes the tone of it wouldnt you say.

I have seen rants on other sites to the effect of “why aren’t their navies sending ships & troops to help, the way we did for the Tsunami relief effort”??!!!??

    As if 🙁

I’m sure Homeland Security and Bush, Cheney & Rumsfield would die before having foreign military ships drop-anchor at New Orleans and send troops ashore. 🙂

Remember how PO’d some Americans were when some of the countries we were aiding didn’t want our troops to carry weapons, or wear their uniforms??

And those who spout the “sole Superpower” schtick would probably hate for the US to be seen with “hat in hand”.

“Go shopping, to keep the economy going, or the Hurricane wins!” just doestn’t have the same patriotic ring to it that the post-9/11 slogans did.

  7. Boris says:

    Fooz,

you miss the point. John is posting this because lots of our citizens have voiced anger that no one is helping (whereas we always “help” others in need). This totally deflates that argument and the misplaced, self-pitying and artificial anger behind it.

    Boris

  8. Mike Voice says:

And one question: can someone ask the NRA if all the shooting and chaos wouldn’t have been avoided if people would not be allowed to have guns ?????????

    LOL

We can’t stop illegals and Meth, why would we be able to stop guns?

Oh wait, guns don’t have to cross our borders, we make them all here. 🙂
