Instead of a noose, Bush gives him a medal

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Tenet could face 9/11 reprimand — Besides all this, where is Bin Laden?

The former CIA director George Tenet is among more than a dozen current and former officials who could be subject to disciplinary proceedings over the agency’s performance before the September 11 attacks.

A classified report by the CIA’s independent watchdog, delivered to the US Congress on Tuesday night, sharply criticised more than a dozen senior officials at the CIA, including Mr Tenet, former clandestine service chief Jim Pavitt and former counterterrorism centre head Cofer Black.

The report, the fruit of a two-year investigation by CIA inspector-general John Helgerson, recommended that the officials be placed before accountability boards – the agency’s disciplinary bodies.

Did anybody else find it weird that not one official was ever punished in any way or even lost a pentition? Maybe now Tenet and those other higher ups that dropped the ball will be made to pay. Although the way Washington works they we probably go after someone lower on the totem pole.

  2. Uvalde Slim says:

Hopefully there will be at least some type of punishment for everyone that screwed up (escpecially Tenet) and also a full investigation into all that Able Danger stuff. I never did figure out why Clinton picked Tenet to replace Woolsey, Tenet was just some Congressionial aide expertise was intelligence and never worked for the CIA or anyother intel group.

  3. raddad says:

Of course there has been no punishment. They were just singing the melody composed by the white house.

  4. AB CD says:

There seems to be something in the water there. Clinton’s CIA guy before Tenet put secure files on his regular unsecured home computer that his children used all the time.

That’s not an award Bush is presenting – it’s a garrot

  6. Teyecoon says:

IMO, just more BS political maneuvering. Blame dodging that is allowed to stick to some scapegoats. Who gets blamed if a London type bombing happens here or during the next Presidential transition? We aren’t any/much safer than before and to place blame on this is pretending that we are and that 9/11 was possible to prevent AT THAT TIME even if they learned of the potential threat.

  7. AB CD says:

Even bigger than Able Danger, the CIA was informed of an attack involving 6 pilots happening on Sept 11 in late July 2001. This was essentially ignored. Also, Saddam’s state run newspaper mentioned Bin Laden bombing the White House before the Pentagon, with Americans cursing Frank Sinatra.
