Chinese milk scandal hits Cadbury – smh.com.au Cripes, how much effort does it take to make a chunk of chocolate without adding poison? Is it THAT difficult?

CADBURY has begun a huge Australia-wide recall of its popular chocolate eclairs after overseas testing raised concerns that the product could be tainted with the chemical at the centre of the toxic Chinese milk scandal.

As revelations emerged that Australian food regulators were testing 50 Chinese milk-based products for melamine, Cadbury Asia Pacific announced yesterday that it had begun a recall of all 180-gram bags of Cadbury Eclairs manufactured in its Beijing plant.

“Late this afternoon we notified our retailers who stocked that product to take the product off the shelves,” a Cadbury spokesman, Daniel Ellis, told the Herald.

“We then asked them to isolate the product. We don’t know yet whether the product contains melamine, we are conducting our own testing and will need to wait for the results.”

However, Cadbury Asia Pacific said that it had tested products made at its Beijing plant after the scandal, which has sickened about 53,000 Chinese babies who drank milk laced with the industrial chemical.

“As a result of these tests … we have received results that cast doubt on the integrity of a range of our products manufactured in China,” the statement said.

Hey, this seems a lot like: “Let’s f**k those chinese, and send them back them products…”
I’m sure the milk scandal is not so widespread as it seems. But meanwhile everybody is using this to effectively put up proteccionism.
Don’t get me wrong, If there is danger, something must be done. But the west has gotten addicted to the cheap 3d world products and forgets that there’s more than just the bottom line.

Maybe now chocolate makers will start making chocolate with real chocolate instead of substituting vegetable oil, using non-dairy “milk” and whatever else was swept off the factory floor.

I think one of the dumbest conservative policies (and it’s a long list!) has been to outsource our food and medicine supply.

More death from China, shocking. When is the world going to wake up and realize what most of us have known for years. Made in China = Shit

  5. Mac Guy says:

What a lot of us fail to realize is that when a company ships their production to another country, there’s some bean counter who has figured out how likely it is that the shitty product will result in a lawsuit. Take the cost of settling X number of lawsuits times Y in average settlements and weigh it against the money the company saves by not paying Americans to do the work. If X*Y < amount saved, hey, you’ve done your shareholders proud.

Sadly, our safety is often valued less than saving a few bucks.

I work at Wal-Mart and I must warn you that we sell Chinese-made Halloween candy. Avoid it all costs. One item that comes to mind is a gummy snake.

And Wall Street taught us what happens when you put Americans as administrators.

After the second world war we used to say the same things about Japanese made products (Jap Crap).

“I’m sure the milk scandal is not so widespread as it seems.”

The article cites “the scandal, which has sickened about 53,000 Chinese babies who drank milk laced with the industrial chemical.”

    Sounds widespread _enough_ to me.

We’re going to have to change the name of the country from China to Melmac!
