Chavez Calls Dropping of A-Bomb, ‘Greatest Act of Terrorism in Recorded History’ How much aid do we give these folks? What a pathetic excuse for a world leader. The American public has been kept in the dark regarding this dude.

If you are looking to win a bar bet know this: since 1999 — a year after Chavez and his new constitution — the country has been renamed to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Addressing the opening ceremonies for the World Festival of Students and Youth, the Venezuelan president paid tribute to the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, telling the crowd of young people that their challenge is the ‘salvation of the planet’ of a world threatened by the voraciousness of North American imperialism.’

I’ve known about this clown for awhile. He’s been in the news sporadically but not as much as maybe he should. Then again, why give him so much attention….it’ll just boost his ego. The main thing that worries me about despots like this is that they channel the dissatisfaction of the general populace towards the United States; making us a scapegoat for their own internal problems. That’s what keeps people like this in power, blaming their troubles on someone else. Hopefully, the people of Venezuela will wake up before it’s too late.

  2. PvtGreg says:

No news to me – Chavez was always a twerp.

  3. Larry White says:

I believe Chavez wants to help his people and is doing so. Big oil wants the profits of selling Venezuean oil to us and Chavez wants the profits to go to his people. You can buy Venezuelan gasoline at Citgo stations and 7-11 stores. This is a good way to help the peasants of Venezuela.

  4. Don says:

I lived in Ecuador for some time and watched a succession of hilariously inept goons march through the office of El Presidente, typically elected by the under-classes after ridiculous campaign promises about redistribution of wealth. The redistribution, of course, went directly to the newly elected tinpot.
The old Banana Republic Dictators have become Banana Republic Presidents, which means a succession of crooks looting the treasury for brief terms, instead of one thug doing it for a lifetime.

  5. ~ says:

Chavez is one of the scariest world leaders we have. The reason the US gives this guy money, and credence, is because he has oil, and lots of it. If you look into Venezuelan politics since this guy came around you’ll see that he’s basically becoming a dictator over the whole region. He is a power-mad, scary guy, and he keeps passing constitutional amendments so he can stay in power. The way things are going it seems that no one has the ability, or the will, to stop him. (The Americans will wait until they have to bomb the region, I’m sure. Why handle things early and diplomatically?)

Ask a Venezeulan about it – because most of the ones with money and sense have left the country.

  6. Proud Alien says:

Just curious: why exactly is he so terrible to your taste? Is this just because he doesn’t follow the US blue prints in his political life? Why do the Yankees always assume that they know the best for other people how to live their lives? Maybe, just maybe, this is why the US is so widely resented around the world? And, again, maybe this type of attitude helps the terrorists to “hate our freedoms”?

  7. Lindsay says:

Sigh – You americans and your looney tunes red scare paranoia. Just because he dares question american sainthood, that and your failed Venezuela coup.

  8. SignOfZeta says:

The difference between an act of war, and an act of terrorism is purely semantic. If you represent a big (usually western) government you can kill as many people as you want as long as you use very expensive weapons, and it is considered war. See for examples; Dresden, the last two invasions of Iraq, the Spanish American War, Hiroshima, Irangate, the list goes on. If you are poor, and the only weapons you have are airplanes, suicide bombings, or roadside cat bombs, then you are labeled a terrorist. The goal is the same; fuck up a lot of shit. The reasons for bombing Japan with the most deadly blast in history, slaughtering well over 100,000 people, mostly civilians, was to scare the living hell out of Japan…to such an extent that it would radically deter the direction of the nation. Explain to me how that isn’t terrorism.

Say what you want about Chavez (a bit crazy, really), but not only has he already survived a US sponsored coup, but he is actually loved by a large majority of his people, whereas the president of the country you and I live in is pretty much the most hated man in the world.

As for the American public not being aware of him…I don’t know what to say about that. The White House has talked quite a bit of smack about him in recent years. I’ve been following his story for some time now.

I highly recommend The Revolution Will Not Be Televised to see what is probably the most closely documented coup in history…and by closely documented I mean the film crew was literally in the capital building when the tanks were at the door.

Wow there are moron reactionaries spouting off complete BS. You guys are obviously tainted by pro-american, pro-western, and pro-capitalist propaganda. The US government has really done a number on it’s people.

The people of Venezuela are awake, they see the problems the 1st world has created for the 3rd world. He isn’t blaming the problems on someone else to take attention away from internal problems. America is the problem.

Calling Chavez childish names like twerp is moronic.

Chavez isn’t a crook either. He is generally out to help the people. I would rather have him in power here in the States, then have reactionary Bush in power.

Saying he is one of the scariest leaders there is, is complete and utter ignorance. The Venezuelans with money, only left because they had money. They didn’t want to have to split the money up, for the people. Being the Cappies they are, they fled. They didn’t have any sense at all, they are the pigs that were the few rich, while everyone else was poor. He is staying in power because the people want him in power. He isn’t power hungry. There is no need to stop him since he is helping the people. He is starting the momentum in Latin America, for revolution. If America bombs Venezuela or does anything to Chavez, the rest of Latin America will hate the US even more.

Just because he is loved by his people means he is a good person who is leading the country in the right direction? Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Osama bin Laden–all of them are/were loved by their people.

On another note, I wonder why the level of corruption in Latin American countries is so high. Not that the U.S. is corruption-free, but having lived in Ecuador (using that as an example), I have seen that corruption permeates the entire system, down to the local police departments and post offices. Why is that? I’ve never been able to come up with a good answer. On the other hand, most of my dealings with individuals and businesses (non-governmental) were pretty good. Maybe when people are in government jobs, they feel like they are entitled or something.

  11. Gillz says:

he’s not wrong. what greater act of terrorism is there than a nuclear weapon? it’s sole purpose was to terrify enemies into submission, or as the high school history books say to terrify japan into surrending.
    Oxford dictionary states:
    “Terrorism |ˈterəˌrizəm| –
the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.”
The dropping of the bomb fits that definition perfectly.

  12. Steve says:

Yeah, Gillz, Hiroshima and Nagasaki did scare Japan into surrendering. And it saved thousands and thousands more American and Japanese lives that would have been lost if the Allies had invaded the Japanese islands.

Of course, the US only entered WWII after Japan sent a bunch of kamikazes into Pearl Harbor. But let’s blame the US for ending the worst war in history early instead of noting why America was even involved in the first place.

  13. Linux_Rocks says:

The reason why there is no corruption in business is that they control the police, and government with money. So if there is corruption in the company there, they can stamp it out by force. If Chavez nationalizes industry, then the corruption in the government will go away.

Chavez is a good person, he is thinking about, and helping the people. He is trying to clean up the mess European imperialism left. They still haven’t cleaned it up, even though they have been independent for a long time now. Chavez is trying to change that. People in the 3rd world are getting sick of Capitalism, and revolution is becoming inevitable.

  14. Fábio C. Martins says:

All he’s doing is talk trash to pump his approval rate. You americans are not exactly popular here in Latin America, specially since the war in Iraq.
I hear here in Brazil the same argument he’s made all the time: on TV, newspapers, etc.
Besides all that though talk Venezuela keeps selling oil to US and he is a extremely popular president, because he is using the money to finance housing and food programs to the poor.

  15. Allan Bond says:

When talking about terrorism in the contemporary sense, most rational people understand it to mean an act of violence or harm inflicted by a small minority of psychotic extremists with evil ambitions. Whether or not it’s defined in the dictionary that way is irrelevant.

Of course, I’m sure many of you would object to the use of the word evil when describing terrorists. To many moral relativists, there is no such thing as evil, just different ways of thinking and approaching life. What a simplistic state of mind!

  16. Dont be stupid says:

Linux_Rocks – “and revolution is becoming inevitable”

Yeah – SA revolutions are ALWAYS so successful.

BTW – you say your a leftist – I would guess a spoiled rich kid that lived in a nice suburban nationhood, who’s parents gave him everything he wanted. Close?

  17. AB CD says:

One reason for so much corruption is because there is so much to be gained by it. When the government is controlling everythign very tightly, then giving a few bribes here and there could mean opening a new business years ahead of schedule.

  18. Linux_Rocks says:

I am not being stupid, what I am saying is true. I didn’t say that they are successful. I know that a lot of them aren’t, most of them haven’t been. New revolutions are coming though, and the US wont be able to do jack about it. They will hopefully be successful, and hopefully Chavez gets things going good in Venezuela.

BTW – you say your a leftist – I would guess a spoiled rich kid that lived in a nice suburban nationhood, who’s parents gave him everything he wanted. Close?

Not close at all, you are wrong. I’m far from rich, I wasn’t spoiled, I am in a semi-rural area, filled with moron reactionaries, and I didn’t get everything I wanted as a kid.

I should have figured some moron reactionary would spout off something stupid to me.

  19. Gillz says:

it amazes me what americans are conditioned to believe and on such a large scale. WWII was all but over, the Germans were out of it. how much longer could the Japs last? the fact that a lone bomber could cruise on in unopposed should attest to that. Steve said it saved thousands of american and japanese lives. how is killing over 120,000 instantly and over double that from the fallout saving lives? it wasnt a military target, it was civilian. in my book that’s the single most horrific and evil act ever commited. the Nazi’s killed 6,000,000 Jews, but that took them 5 years. History is written by the victor.

I wonder if FDR would have used the bomb

  20. Steve says:

Steve said it saved thousands of american and japanese lives. how is killing over 120,000 instantly and over double that from the fallout saving lives?

What I said, Gillz, was that Hiroshima and Nagasaki cost fewer lives than an invasion of the Japanese mainland. Neither was an attractive option, but the A-bombs were the less costly, in total human terms, of the two. The Okinawa campaign (April through June ’45) resulted in over 215,000 dead civilians and Japanese and American soldiers. Compare those islands to Honshu, the main Japanese island, and you’ll see why Truman had to consider an estimated one million American casulaties – 20,000 American deaths in the first month of fighting. The Japanese had two million troops defending their homeland, and experience proved that they were willing to fight to the death. Top it all off with civilian casualties. You do the math. Yes, Truman’s decision cost many lives, but it saved hundreds of thousands more.

it wasnt a military target, it was civilian.

You’re mistaken. The Japanese put their military assets in civilian areas to protect them (the military assets, not the civilians). Hiroshima was the headquarters of the Japanese 2nd Army. Or is that fact part of my “conditioning”?

in my book that’s the single most horrific and evil act ever commited

I wonder at your sense of proportion. An action meant to ultimately save lives and shorten the war somehow pales compared to the “racial cleansing” of 6 million, or even the 250,000 to 300,000 the Japanese murdered in Nanjing in ’37-’38? Oh, I understand now. America is always wrong…

  21. Linux_Rocks says:

FDR wouldn’t have used the bombs, he would have taken there unconditional surrender they were trying to do, the one Truman ignored.

Henry Wallace should have been vice president in FDR’s 4th term. He also wouldn’t have used the bombs. But the democrats being bourgeois as they are, made Truman vice president instead of Henry Wallace. It is because Henry Wallace was “soft” on Communism. Which is BS, if anything he would have been smart enough not to make relations with the USSR bad. It would have made the world’s political climate a lot better, and the political climate now would be a lot better. The Korean War probably wouldn’t have happened, and there would have been a longer Peace, until a reactionary like Eisenhower would get into power. But that is all history, and you cant change it. Also don’t say “Jap”, it is racist.
