The end of the one-buttom mouse…it’s about time.

Apple – Mighty Mouse

Meet the mouse that reinvented the wheel. The scroll wheel, that is. At $49, Mighty Mouse features the revolutionary Scroll Ball that lets you move anywhere inside a document, without lifting a finger. And with touch-sensitive technology concealed under the seamless top shell, you get the programability of a four-button mouse in a single-button design. Click, roll, squeeze and scroll. This mouse just aced the maze.
Spry and Mighty

In the beginning, there was one button. Then there were two. Then there were clickable scroll wheels and programmable toggles and solid-state slides. But nobody made a mouse as easy to use as your Mac. Until now. Mighty Mouse combines the capability of a multibutton mouse with Apple%u2019s signature top-shell design for the best of both form and function. Use it any way you work: Stick with single-button simplicity or click with multibutton efficiency.

    My reactions after seeing this:

    – good luck for support personnel trying to explain over the phone just precisely what the user should do…

    – another first from Apple. I just wish they could innovate in something more substantial…

    – WOW – it works with Windows!!!

    – a trackball (which in itself is just an inverted mouse) on top of a mouse! 😛

    – will it cost less than $150?

I bought a new Mighty Mouse. It fits the hand well and the scroll “button” works smoothly. The left and right touch sensitive “buttons” work well too.

I have two gripes. The programable features are very limited. For example you can not program a button to be the Internet Browser “back” command. You can do that with Logitech and Kensington mice that work with the Mac.

Also, the squeeze the side button is really almost useless. It is very weird to get you hand in the correct position to make it click. It is possilbe to click on only one side, but that is awkward too.

The mouse works on Windows XP, but the functionality is reduced since there is no software support for Windows. The left and right buttons work well and so does the scroll feature. The sideways scroll doesn’t seem to work on PC. The side button is inoperative.

I imagine somebody will do a driver in due course.

I was able to use the Mighty Mouse through a USB KVM switch between a Mac and a PC. It was a little tricky to set up but it does work fine once you have it going.

I would say as a trade up from a traditional Apple Mouse, or if you really want you mouse to look like it was made by Apple, this is the hardware for you. If you have already got a mult-button mouse, or a decent trackball that you like, save your money for something more compelling.

As someone old enough to remember watching the cartoons, I like the small print, at the bottom of the page:

I haven’t bought one, yet. Dude, we need one that’s cordless. How about a Bluetooth version?

If it’s anything like my iBook, it’ll be slightly off.. just enough to be annoying.. but not far enough to warrant replacement by Apple (ie. trackpad, keyboard, keys, latch). I’ve had a Logitech on my PC for years and years… and I still scrolled to here on the page. It’ll be a nice advancement when it’s needed, except I don’t see a need yet. I mean honestly, how many of us really use that default software-scroll-anywhere thing that loads with Windows when you put a scroll mouse in? Doesn’t everyone switch it to double-click? I’d like to see the Adobe “Spacebar-Hand” find its place with other programs.. or maybe an OS-based-window-zoom with the speed and fluidity of Expose on OSX.

I tried it out and didn’t think the right click worked they way I thought it would. I always had to lift my index finger off of the left button before it would allow a right click. I like the scroll ball, I think it’s good.

That said, I’ll wait for either a wireless verison or the next revision of the wired version.

You could of sold a few of these here John. What’s up with the 3 free book deal ad? Some guy is giving away free dead mice. You pay S&H.

I am struggling with getting a Mighty Mouse working with an Iogear 4-port USB KVM switch. Would Bill be willing to share his setup procedure? Thanks.
