Fanhouse – 9/15/08:

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson committed what ESPN broadcaster Mike Tirico called “one of the all-time bonehead plays” tonight against the Dallas Cowboys, spiking the football and celebrating a 61-yard touchdown — before he crossed the goal line.

That means it wasn’t a touchdown at all — it was a 60-yard reception that ended with a fumble at the 1-yard line. Fortunately for Jackson, however, two other people made mistakes on the play: The nearest official, who signaled a touchdown, and the nearest Cowboy, Adam “Pacman” Jones, who assumed it was a touchdown and failed to pounce on the ball when Jackson dropped it.

But wait, there’s more. This is not the first time Mr. Jackson has done something stupid in the endzone:

My SA Sports – 2/20/07:

Jackson had broken free for an apparent 53-yard touchdown reception in the 2005 Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome when he spread his arms in a swan dive and dove toward the end zone. He landed at the 1-yard line.

  2. This joker was at UC Berkeley for a couple of years but had to quit school and go pro. He never seemed too bright and his father was apparently at all the games and anything else he could get into to complain that his boy was not getting the ball enough. Last years crummy season at Cal was eventually blamed on DeSean’s negative locker room vibe. This stupid stunt will result in a public humiliation that he’ll never live down. His other antics were never made so public. That said, he could become a great receiver in the mold of Cliff Branch.

  3. Leon Lett says:

I thought it was a good play, and DeSean should have a long career ahead of him just like I had.

  4. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

Had this cost them the game, then it’s an all-timer. As it is, he only gets to live with this as his NFL rep for as long as he’s there. The Philly fans will not let him forget.

  5. scadragon says:

Hey! Ain’t you supposed to actually have the ball in your hands until AFTER you cross the goal line?

  6. Sinn Fein says:

So, for very special short-bus players like Desean, shouldn’t “close enough” be close enough? What a maroon…can you say, “Heavy Fine” as an EZ reminder to never, ever, be this brilliant again?

    This makes me Laugh..

This kid is making more money then MOST of us will make in our lives, 2nd lives, 3rd lives..
If many of us had performed in our jobs, like this.. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN?

WHO votes for Aussie rules football??

  8. Great game, I feel sorry for McNabb’s trials with idiotic showboats.

During the broadcast the one of the announcers were stating that “Jackson is cocky”. Well, his cockiness now has him looking like a buffoon. I think he plays nervous in combination with over anxiety.

Too many head blows. Stress induced vision impairment, next comes slurred speech, then the drooling.

  10. Thomas says:

It is not the most bonehead play only because Philly retained possession and scored on the next play. Had Dallas been less bonehead and recovered the fumble or if Philly had not scored, it would have topped the bonehead list.

There can be no more eloquent response to this other than…. FUCKING TAAAAAARD!

And it was great to see the all-new Adam “Not Pacman” Jones have no clue about the opportunity that was laid right there in front of him. They say you can’t coach speed, well, you can’t buy brains, either. Adam spent too much time in the “script” joints, I guess.

  13. TonyB says:

As a long time NY Giants fan, I can still remember “the fumble.” To me, that was the most boneheaded play, not because somebody was showing off, but because this was the play they called.

  14. Montanaguy says:

This poor underpaid jock obviously needs a raise to motivate him to finish his runs. Take a hint from corporations that bonus failing, departing CEO’s hindreds of millions and ‘thank you for ruining our fine company’
