Baby married to dog: South Asia : Hindustan Times.com — Perhaps sickening stories like this are one of the reason the US media stays home with its coverage. There is zero mention of this weird story except in INdia and you’d expect some outrage. The Mom was against the idea. Local priests advised this coupling. What lunatics.

A baby girl in West Bengal was married off to a dog “to ward off the evil eye” that her father feared due to a premature appearance of her teeth.

Six-month-old Disha married her canine groom Pomi Monday at a Hindu ceremony at Polba village in Hooghly district.

The marriage was conducted for the girl’s “well-being” as she had grown teeth before her “annoprasan” or “rice ceremony” – a function when the baby is fed solids for the first time.

Reports said the girl’s father Kamalendu Bandopadhayay, who works in a court, was advised by some priests to conduct the marriage. The man spent about Rs.40,000 on the ceremony.

Did the dog get a dowry?

  2. Anthony says:

    Must you ask?

India can keep the news coverage.

  3. Lindsay says:

Why is this disgusting ? its just a good luck ceremony that has no particular significance. Its been done for centuries over there, sometimes in mass ceremonies.

Kinda blows a hole in the arguments against same sex marriage. If they marry animals in other countries, why not same sex? Are we any better than people in other counties? Why not multiple husbands or wives? Then we could use the left –over fetuses from all the Baal Abortions like the Chinese, they serve them in restaurants. It’s only the uptight religious right that has a problem with this type of behavior. If we could only become more progressive like India, then we too could become a cloning and hi-tech country. We might even get some of the outsourced tech-support jobs back, of course at competitive wages. They make what, $5 a day there?

Hindu’s believe in reincarnation, so I wonder who the dog was reincarnated from? If it’s an uncle or relative, is it incest, or is that even a problem in India? Since I don’t believe a marriage in India is official until it’s been consecrated in the bedroom, was this part of the wedding? The news article didn’t seem to feel there was any big deal to this, so is just how often does this happen.

I’m glad we’re importing this type of culture into the U.S. with all the 401B visas, or whatever they’re called. I wonder how often it’s happening here in the U.S. I don’t want to be culturally insensitive, but can the little girl ever be married again? Can she get a divorce, or does the dog of husband have to be put down first? Did the dog consent to being married, if he didn’t then can the dog sue? If it was in the backwards U.S., PETA was probably sue for the dog. Then again does PETA know about this? I bet PETA would be upset, after all they wouldn’t want a dog subjected to the humiliation of such a poorly made match, and there was no mention of a dowry either, did the brides father throw the groom even a bone for his trouble? I’m really glad we have so many Hindu’s here to enlighten us and help us backward American become more progressive and enlightened.

  5. India is full of underdeveloped villages where all kinds of things happen. Lack of proper education is big reason for events like this. But how do you explain Scientology, Modern-day Saints, Maharishi Yogi, Deepak Chopra, apocalypse-now doomday cults? Apparently, people who are part of these groups are educated idiots. Religion and cults have power that defies reason. I suggest you look at the compilation of cults presented by the Rick Ross Institute.

Incest is a not a problem in Christiainity either. All human beings are supposed to have come from a single couple – Adam and Eve. This means inbreeding and/or incest.

  7. It is rather unusual but not unheard of custom. I blogged about a similar incident on April 9th – The sad case of five year old girl married off to a dog

To quote from the blog entry:

However it is not such a big deal as the title may suggest. They will be married later normally to humans and the dogs would not consummate the marriage.

I think the NGO’s should focus their energy in education and health and let the tribals be with their own customs, however strange that may seem to us. We do not want to lose them like Mayans or American Indian’s.

With their different ways and customs and rituals they are a very valuable part of India and part of what makes India.

To the Anon Coward who said: Did the dog get a dowry?

No, it signed a pre-nuptial agreement arranged by ambulance chasing lawyers from USA.

Interesting questions. To add another train of thought, how did a six month old sign her marriage certificate? How did the dog? Is the marriage legal if neither the groom nor bride willingly signed their own marriage certificate?

Now suppose that the marriage passes the legal tests. Could the wife take out a large insurance policy on her dog of a husband? Could the insurance deny coverage to the dog? Will the husband be expected to find gainful employment. Would he qualify for a police K9 position; after all, his father-in-law already works in the justice system? Would it be proper to now refer to the wife as a bitch? Could we expect a litter in the near future?

Dogs are not human. Dogs *don’t* have any constitutional rights (they have rights but not constitutional ones). Dogs are not citizens.

Multiple partners? That isn’t a equal right. It’s is however equal that you can’t have multiple partners because no one is allowed to. The law doesn’t change based on the kind of person you are.

But, Moral…. why did the press cover it (and then onto google news…..) if it wasn’t to be made fun of. Obviously, the news people also found it to be an eye roller……just like when (on our other coast) the “hillbillies” do something stupid, or when some Amish kids pull some drunken hijinx against the “town folk”, or when some little old lady wastes all her money on Psychics and contacting the dead, or, more lately, when some government agency acts irrationally, and when Tom Cruise shows how shallow and NUTS he is. Let’s face it, people are downright DUMB sometimes. Some articles on the web are “head shakers”, pure and simple. It’s nice to see that the United States doesn’t have all the crazies. It’s rather comforting.
Thing is….. the article, while being humorous, fails to point out the answer to a simple question like: WTF? Do boys ever get married to dogs……barking ones? Or is this some silly thing reserved for the girls? Plus, remember, here it is ILLEGAL to marry an animal. It’s illegal to “love your dog too much”. There are LAWS on the books in some states — which leads one to believe that there must be some reason for the laws being there. Here it would be an outrage, and yep, PETA might very well sue, press for animal control to prosecute, yada yada. The possibilities are endless. It does make same-sex marriage rather tame, though, by comparision.
But, the news from India can be a bit bewildering — we have no cultural context to understand it. So, your replies are helpful…..sort of.

  11. Lindsay says:

Anthony – you do realise that the USA is not the whole world ? that those funny little places on the news where they don’t speak right actually don’t follow US law, and that your applying US laws and rights to the article is completely meaningless ?

  12. There is a special group of people known as Scheduled Tribes, who had traditionally been living of forest produce (hunting and gathering) and have only recently taken to farming. They still retain a great deal of their old practices. John, of course, is not aware of all this. But, I still cannot tolerate any attempts to make fun of these people.

I can easily forgive John because a great deal of Indians (mostly living abroad) base their livelihood in providing Westerners with “shocking stuff” about India.

I want to bring attention to the mail I wrote to John where I mentioned about India being a big dump. It has everything. There is a great deal of everything here. There are over 2000 languages and dialects. The difference between two adjacent states would be far starket than what you may find between France and Britain. There are people who live in stone age and there are those who dabble in space technology. We have negroes in Nicobar islands and caucasians in Jammu & Kashmir. There are Jews in Kerala. Christianity landed in India far before it had any amount of success in Europe or Middle East. It will take you a lifetimes to get all this.

  13. And, we have laws too. It is there for those who want them. A woman in my neighbourhood hanged herself. There was no police investigation. No inquest. They just arranged the burial pronto. Ask any hold India hand. Police in India will let you do anything. They will bother to look only if someone registers a complaint.

  14. Moral Volcano says:

And, I wouldn’t worry about the girl. The ceremony over, I guess they shooed away the dog.

  15. Anthony says:

Then go marry a dog Lindsay in your country. I’ll stick to the US and it’s “meaningless” laws though.

  16. Lindsay says:

Sigh – Anthony, you really should brush up on your comprehension skills. I did not say your laws were meaningless – I said its was meaningless to assume they applied in India, its pretty simple really.

Looks like I hit a nerve though – bit of a chip on that shoulder ?

  17. Anthony says:

No I just don’t think you have a clue, but I guess I’m in good company eh?

  18. a.iyengar says:

eating human anus is better than the conversion methods carried out by the churches and most importantly christianity minus wealth is zero.
hinduism is being accepted by all the western countries and it is spreading in all the countries with originality.
