Europe Suffers as Mercury Soars | Europe | Deutsche Welle | — Hmmm. There seems to be a theme here. Climate change? Things are looking better and better for Canada!

Southern Europe is sweltering in a heat wave, raising the specter of a similar spell that killed thousands across the continent in 2003. Farmers and energy suppliers have been especially hard hit.

A heat wave that is threatening water supplies in Spain, Portugal and Italy, and the agriculture and energy industries are bearing the brunt of the difficulties.

After more than a week of high temperatures and following numerous dry months, crops are failing throughout Italy, particularly in the north.

  1. Miguel Lopes (Portugal) says:

Quite actually the weather has been absolutely marvellous this week! Not too hot, not too cold, no wind (as is usual here in June) and even a bit of rain!!! Really!

But the news is true, it’s been a hell of a drought. And just to amaze everyone, golf courses keep popping up everywhere… Maybe we have the highest ratio of golf courses per capita in the entire planet… And water for them has to come from somewhere – so the result is that some places – usually small villages away from the capital, Lisbon – have to go through Summer with little or no water… So there for portuguese democracy…

Another stupid trend is replacing all native vegetation with decorative grass originating in higher latitudes… These, of course, need much more water… And look uglier, IMHO… Of course, it’s much trendier… 😛

It’s all the result of having the worst pupils in class becoming prime ministers, mayors and CEOs …

  2. AB CD says:

The bigger problem with the heat waves is that the French and other countries are already trying to cut back on greenhouse gases, so that means less air conditioning.

  3. Smith says:

I don’t understand this crap about thousands dying from the heat. Last year, I read of 20,000 Frenchmen dying from the heat wave. What is up with this? Is iced-tea outlawed in France? Is there no shade? Has France decided to build on the great Tour de France by adding a European version of the Bataan Death March?

How does a “civilized” country lose 20,000 people to a heat wave? Answer: it doesn’t; this is pure propaganda BS.

And now this year I see the same sort of BS coming from Italy.

  4. Luís Camacho says:

It rained here yesterday but I heard that Alentejo hasn’t seen any decent rain for months!

Over here, its President and Senator. 🙂

  6. Mike Craig says:

Warmer weather for Canada (or any northern country) is not necessarily a good thing. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitioba are all experiencing record floods this year. Meanwhile in Alaska, Yukon and the Northwest Territory permafrost is melting and playing havoc with buildings and roads.

  7. site admin says:

Maybe, but the Okanagan/Similkameen wine regions of British Columbia are making some terrific products that I think would be impossible otherwise. Keep an eye out for the delicious wines from Burrowing Owl Vineyards in the southern part of the valley.

  8. Max says:

Anyone ever hear of something called the Ice Age? I wonder if the mamoths farted too damn much and caused the great melt. Please people, it happens – the Earth goes through cycles: warm to cool, cool to warm. To think humanity is the reason it’s “getting hotter” (and that can be debated as well) is just arrogance.
