Mad Cow in the US – Dishonest Beef – Health Supreme

  1. Ed Campbell says:

Brilliant primary source. Folks out here in cattle country have the usual choices: buy crappy beef from your chain supermarket, buy expensive organic and natural beef from folks like Whole Foods [and they’re now getting cornered into bidding wars for the stuff] — or find yourself a conscientious broker who sells direct.

I won’t put up his email address without his permission and I think he’s off on one of his monthly marketing trips; but, Mark Wright offers guaranteed BSE-free beef from New Mexico herds — from cattlemen who have their beef tested even though it’s against the law for them to do it!

  2. Miguel Lopes (Portugal) says:

AGAINST THE LAW TO TEST FOR BSE?!?!?!?!

    YIKES!!!

I think BSE is highly overrated, but I’d rather be safe than sorry…

Illegal to do the right thing? Why?

  3. Ed Campbell says:

Miguel — it’s against the law, here, for states or consumers or producers to do any testing. The presumption is — the Feds are the only ones allowed to test for public consumption.

There are a number of issues similar to this where local and regional producers want to get testing performed to show the public their food is safe — and the Feds won’t allow it.

Especially if the really big dudes in AgriBiz don’t want the tests performed in the 1st place.

  4. Pat says:

My own take is that BSE is highly over rated. Check out the numbers.

In England, where BSE became “epidemic”, 150 people have died from either or strongly suspected Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the human form of BSE. At the same time, over 35,000 animals have been diagnosed with the disease and an estimate of up to 1,000,000 may have had the disease.

The probability of getting heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, obesity, and other conditions associated with beef and beef products remain the number one killer in the U.S. Beef is a nutritious as well as delicious food. In moderation. When eaten to excess, as most Americans do, then it does become a health issue.

So what should we be excited about? An illness with a 1 per million occurrence (in the U.S.), or something that kills thousands everyday.
