Canadian Beer FTW !
Budweiser was and is, I think, a Czech beer. The (formerly) American company used the name in figuring no one would notice, because, I mean, who would in the 19th century? Only people from that area in Europe.
By the time those beer aficionados became aware of this in the late 70’s / early 80’s it was already a faites accomplis so nothing could be done, nor should it have been. Except in Europe, which, at least in some areas, should have slapped down the Bud people and made them change their name. Don’t think that happened or will happen.
As for the beer, it’s no surprise that a global corporation, (formerly) headquartered in the U.S. would sell itself to foreign interests. I mean, it’s all about making money, right? Who gives a fig about America or Americans when it comes down to it, at least if your a rich SOB who figures (s)he needs yet another house but lost count anyway.
Love the MP joke. It’s not as true as it use to be but still holds for most mass produced schlock. My wife like the Miche orange beer stuff. And she doesn’t drink. Therein lies the story. It’s like drinking an orange creamsickle. And AB is making some nice stuff too but they always seem to be in the test marketing arena and either never sell the stuff everywhere or change it significantly when they do (their honey lager). Couldn’t stand their 4th of July is for (and because of) the military junk they pounded into everyone’s heads at Busch Gardens Williamsburg when I was there on July 1 but they do have some good beer. Ah, you live in a rich family for a few generations and you become a neocon.
“… owned by the Dutch”
Just shows you how informed the people are who are running this blog.
#32
Is it shocking that an American doesn’t know the difference between two European countries?
#34. Stefan- No one is forcing you to read this blog right? Ever made a mistake…no probably not.
European Union…get over it.
#36 LOL
God invented war to teach Americans geography.
#37. QB- check your post #35. referencing #32. and tell me if it makes any sense.
ROTFL And touchy too! Relax.
Yes, Budweiser, aka Budvar, is in fact, a Czeck lager. The yeast that is used, and the adjunct (rice) that is used, is also used in the original. http://www.budvar.cz/en/web/index.html
As far as an American *ALE* (different yeast, different fermentation, different brew) is concerned, I would take a Sam Adams or a local micro brew any day. Ale does not keep as long as lager. Lager is the German word for “storage.”
Who knows, for the style of beer that Budweiser is, it’s hard to make, let alone make consistantly. It’s a Light American Lager. Very little taste, low alcohol. If there are any flaws, they will be noted.
Anheiser-Busch does a good job with it. Not that I like it, but they do a good job.
“Nature makes wine, but civilization makes beer.” Discuss in a group and chug whenever “beer” is said.
#27: Thanks for the tip, MM. That’s about 8 miles from where I live, in St Louis Park. I actually drove through that area about 3 weeks ago, while showing my daughter the U of M campus and the Hennepin bridge.
We ate at Hong Kong Noodles close to campus, not far from the basketball arena. Very good Chinese food with a very broad menu. They list about 400 dishes on the takeout menu alone. We’ve tried 4 dishes between us, and every one was great!

I…uh….”third” that. Belgian ales rock!
Relax everybody. I’m sure the europeans will still give us that crappy animal urine-flavored beer called budweiser according to the old american family recipe.
I find reading all of these comments pathetic. I love Budweiser. And the comments about Anheuser-Busch being owned by the European company InBev are ignorant- American Ale has been in the works for 2 years! InBev has NOTHING to do with it!
Maybe if our country wasn’t in a recession and our dollar was worthless our American companies like Anheuser-Busch wouldn’t been so easy to buy out.
PS- Bud Light is the number one selling light beer in the world
I Just Today was thinking I would like a Bud “Dark” or something like that, when “Lo and Behold” I walked into my supermarket a found the New Bud Ale! I am drinking one NOW!! I LIKE IT! I am from California and NOW live in Oregon! The Cascade HOPS are great!I love Budweiser and this new BREW is GREAT! try it!
For a couple of years, the Ford Pinto was the number one selling car in the world.
Budweiser, American Ale isn’t a bad beer. Its not exactly an AMERICAN ale, but it if far superior to the reg products they produce. For a true AMERICAN beer, I suggest Samuel Adams. Its the owners great, great, great grandfathers (yes, he was a brewer) recipe. Thats pretty much as AMERICAN as you can get. BTW, its also named after a great patriot, who was also a brewer. Think about it.
Belgian beer is the best!!!
How to become a millionaire?
1) Learn how to brew a good European beer.
2) Brew it in the USA.
3) Sell it as “great* American beer”.
*If American Budweiser seems to be a good one, something between American and Czech Budweiser would be great.
PS. beer brewed by people in relative small breweries is usually far way better than mass-produced beverages.
