SocietyGuardian.co.uk | Health | Viagra may cause blindness, warns US

US health officials are examining rare reports of blindness among some men using the impotence drug Viagra.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating up to 50 reports of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy blindness, or NAION.

FDA spokeswoman, Susan Cruzan, said they have no evidence yet that the drug is to blame but added, “We take this seriously.”

Uh, exactly what do they mean by NO EVIDENCE? What kind of reporting is this?

This story has now been picked up by all the news outlets only because it harkens back to the “sex will make you go blind” or “sex will make you go mad” assertions of American Puritans. Makes for a good headline. You’ll see the Viagra causes dementia stories next. Also with NO EVIDENCE. I think someone is out to ruin Pfizer.

Will someone read this artiocle to me

  2. Rance Bleester says:

Come on! They just re-cycled an old headline.
It should have read “Masturbation may cause blindness..”
Next comes the hairy palms part.
You know, the main reason most men can’t pop a boner
is lack of excitement and they get tired of the same old “no, no …
down there, softy” crap from the woman.
    There is a solution.
Toss away those purple pills guys, and get yerself a real
love partner – that’s right a Love Doll.
Never gets tired of sex, a great listener and folds down nice for travel.

  3. Mike Voice says:

The “no evidence” line reminds me of listening to the radio today, and hearing a General say there was no “credible” evidence of anyone flushing a Qu’ran down the toilet at Gitmo.

In both of these cases: “Reports” are not evidence, let alone “credible” evidence. 🙂

I like that in the Gitmo denial, it is so specific as to the action being denied, that it doesn’t deny there may have been other “mis-handlings” of the Qu’ran – which fall outside the specific denial of flushing the entire book down the toilet.

I think a better way to “ruin Pfizer” would be to ignore possible issues and in the event the problem was with the drug, continue to deny there is a problem. The only way to stay “clean” in situations like this is to do honest research and moniter the effects of the product after it is released.

  5. Pat says:

I bet Pfizer didn’t see that coming.

  6. Mike Voice says:

Shouldn’t Hugh Hefner be blind – twice-over – by now??

  7. Miguel Lopes says:

Any blockbuster drug is goinf to suffer ‘attacks’ such as this – remember Prozac? As with any suspected adverse effect, with or without evidence, I’m sure it will be thouroughly investigated, by Pfizer, the FDA and every other regulatory body in the world.

In the end we may all decide it’s better to risk going blind than buying one of those ‘real dolls’!!! 😀 Can you imagine waking up next to that cold dead stare? =8| Yikes!

  8. Mister Mustard says:

Whoa! Almost SEVEN THOUSAND BUCKS for the “Real Doll”?!?!?!!? You’d have to be a pretty well-heeled geek to pony up that kind of cash. Better (and cheaper) to get an extreme makeover, go to charm school, and get a real girl, it seems to me. Seven thousand bucks for a rubber doll. What’s this world coming to?

  9. Rance Bleester says:

    Wha?
    7000 bucks??
Why, mine only cost me $3550.49.
I mean, “mine” in the plural sense of “one’s” as in,
“one’s” could have possibly cost $3500 a few years back.
Still beats going blind, cross-eyed and gettin’ those hairy palms.
For example, you could never be a hand model except for
    winter gloves.
    That’s a small market, I’m told.

  10. Steve Mulligan says:

Levitra causes blindness too. Ha, first to say that!
