Um. I couldn’t find a photo of the glasses…

If film stars in sunglasses in dark clubs at night seem ridiculous, it looked even more baffling when beach volleyball players at the Olympics took to the court wearing frames with no lenses.

“The lenses fog up because of the humidity, so you can’t wear the glasses without popping out the lenses,” U.S. men’s volleyballer Phil Dalhausser told reporters…

Several beach volleyball players wear glasses at night to reduce the glare of floodlights or protect their eyes from flying sand but the frames serve no other purpose than sponsorship.

Is the advertising more important than the event?

    I think I like this picture better….

However, it’s possible that we’re talking lensless GOGGLES, which may indeed be useful protection against flying volleyballs….

Ordinary eyeglass frames might not be of much value there….

    Just a thought….

On some of the US volley ball games I watched, the players are covered in temporary tattoos of their brand sponsors. Because they don’t wear enough clothing, for the brands to show up on that (and no brand wants its name on the bikini bottoms, yet). It made me think the players’ skin was exploited like racecars and their drivers. Those guys’ jumpsuits are nothing but advertising now. Do the sponsors really believe enough fans will run out and buy whatever product name appears on Walsh’s skin? Or Danica Patrick’s jumpsuit? That’s being pretty desperate, to raise their sales figures a notch.

Like it or not, without corporate sponsorship there would be no US team. Besides after they make a name for themselves almost all the amateurs lend their names to brands.

is it still fair use when you quote the entire article?

#5 – still have no perception about blogging, eh?

  7. Sea Lawyer says:

The grammatically challenged comment after the quote makes it all better.

They’ve been using frame-only eye protection in raquetball for ever. Are these frames truly cosmetic-only, or are the reporters just stupid?

  9. Sinn Fein says:

Lenses or no, that’s clearly a nice hot bod shot!

  10. GregAllen says:

I’m pretty sure this blog is right but, I have to wonder, are they wearing them to avoid getting the ball in their eye?

  11. Fedup says:

    Beautiful!

  12. Offroad says:

I vote the reporters are stupid. These are just like in racketball. They provide a little light reflection protection and some eye socket protection. Of course they are fasionable too as any eyeglass should be. One of the reporters said the lenses must have fallen out, because he was clueless about the design and function.

Safety glasses without lenses? Having been cut by my frames…

Of course the money matters…So does the glory. Ya get paid more that way.

These people invested a lot of time and money to get to the top and most of them don’t make it.
