Colin Powell isn’t going to retreat. He’s just advancing in another direction. I’m sure only he knows what direction that is. The guy knows his way around the military and the political landscapes. He’s a survivor regardless of what the situation is. I thought he would of made a very good Secretary of Defense. I guess that wasn’t in the cards.
I think Powell’s absence at the convention is very telling. People’s mere presence at a political convention means much more than them just being there. It makes a statement. There’s so much symbolism in politics. If Powell were just “moving in another direction,” he would probably still attend because “that’s just what’s done.” By not attending, he’s symbolizing a break in the unity of the Bush administration.
