Linux Community Implodes — I just finished this essay for PCmag.com and expect quite a bit of flak for it since I targeted the nutballs who think everything written pro-or-con about Linux is about them personally. Worth reading. Let me know what you think on that forum and here too.

  1. Taz says:

Will you now do a similiar article about rabid Mac users or rabid Windows fanatics (both of which exist in abundance) or is it only attacks on Open Source that are now popular enough?

  2. Russell Kanning says:

I think the Linux community will survive. I use Linux and didn’t even know anything about this spat. (Wow these guys are worked up) The important parts of the Linux community are alive. New software keeps being written and I get help using it. 🙂

    Linux Lover,
    Russell

  3. Mr T. says:

Listen John, I respect you and I have supported and read your stuff for years. I your boldness. You have also been able to correct yourself a number of times when you were wrong.

I am part of the linux community, but I am also an avid Microsoft user. Why? Because I happen to like the latest MS products.

I also use linux exclusively at home. Why? Because Its free, and I prefer not to pirate. How many copies of MS Office out there do you think are legal?

Opensource is the ultimate reason why software pirates should be prosecuted. “If you could get something similar for free, why did you steal?”

I see a very strong linux community. One that thrives and grows. Built with hundreds of thousands of people that don’t care what the big corporates run, because they run it themselves.

You should know that the linux community is not made up of IBM, Red Hat, Novell and the like, but of individuals using the software themselves.

When you hear “Lunatics” ranting or attacking or acting “Paranoid”, or “Crazy”, and you associate that to the Linux community, you are mistaken. They are actually your brothers, the people that thrive on creating a buzz, and living on confrontation..

We’ll keep on using OSS, and supporting each other. You go ahead and act like the journalist you are.
