Immigrant advocates called it a laughable charade with little to no chance of succeeding without any carrots to offer self-deportees…
As far as I recall, breaking the law is still breaking the law.
We’re not discussing something principled like civil disobedience. This is a discussion about economic means and ends. As it always is about illegal migrant labor.

They think illegals live in fear of bullying cops and scrounge for food while in reality they live in closely knit communities who watch out for each other. Mostly against bullying cops. I guess it’s better to cope with how we treat our “fellow man” just because they are powerless to protect themselves (although being an illegal alien protects them from having car insurance and if one did rob you, do you think anyone including cops would put that much effort into bringing an unnamed person to justice.) Rather then sit in the desert with even more substandard housing and no work or care.
This appears to be a sensible option for illegal aliens. They can wait until they are caught and face time in jail, possible separation from family and especially their children, and a criminal record that will keep them from returning legally.
If the illegals don’t take advantage of this program, then don’t expect any mercy.

Where I live, there is a charter bus that leaves every Saturday morning from the Mexican store for the border. Every illegal is free to hop on it and go for the low price of $65.

Why should companies have to ‘fess up? Most of the hiring is of people with ‘valid’ documents. So if you take someone with all the required paperwork, and say you think he is illegal or report him, all the usual complainers will come after you for discrimination.
Not only that, if the Social Security numbers don’t match, the Feds send you a letter saying that the non-matching should NOT be interpreted as a sign of being illegal or ineligible to work, and the employer should do nothing more than ask them to correct their paperwork.
They tried to change this to a requirement that you fire them, but a federal judge blocked it.
#9 I don’t agree. As an exec in CA for many years, I can say that isn’t hard to spot a bogus attempt. Most of these people don’t speak English. English is an acceptable B.F.O.Q. in CA.
That eliminates most of the problem right there.
You know what almost every other country does to “visa jumpers” (as undocumented are often called.)
You must apply for a visa or visa change FROM OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY.
In those countries people must “voluntarily deport” themselves to get a legitimate visa.
It’s such a simple, effective system but Americans never learn from foreigners. Most have no idea what other countries do.
If only my Cherokee ancestors had had such a program! If only the West Germans had such a program for those who managed to scale the Berlin Wall! If only we hadn’t stolen California from Mexico fare and square! If only Congress hadn’t changed the immigration laws in the early 20th century due to racism and bigotry. my brother works in a profession where he has many immigrants (presumably illegal) working for the company he works for. he says that any time any of them want to take a trip home to mexico, they just get caught, and enjoy the free one way trip. when theyve had their fun, and want to come back to the us, they just pay a coyote to take them back. there might as well not even be a border.

California was ceded to the US, along with much other territory. The defeat of Santa Ana’s government and Army left Mexico in a precarious state. $15 million was given to the Mexican government to stave off collapse and civil war which would have involved the newly won territories.
There was also the claim the money was to pay for the damages caused by the invading Army but as I recall, Taylor refused to pay for any damages his army caused. It is also claimed that much of the money was never paid. If this was worth my time, I would dig a little deeper to find more material.
