This is hilarious. I’ve seen people do this for years in all sorts of contexts, including the business world. I want to see Obama give Chief Justice Roberts one after the oath of office.

Can the fist bump mix with business?

The handshake may always have a firm grip on business, but the fist bump is making inroads — albeit in the face of some resistance.

“I have not encountered a fist bump and would judge anyone who tried it as a total redneck,” says Dr. Grace Keenan, medical director of Nova Medical and Urgent Care Center in Ashburn, Va. “I hope that it never is seen as a replacement for a handshake in the business community.”

[…] So far, executives say, it is exchanged almost exclusively among male business associates who are otherwise friends, or in informal settings such as the end of a golf round. Fist bumping, or two people tapping fists lightly, has a long way to go to unseat the handshake, a gesture that goes back to medieval times when opponents used it to indicate that they were friendly and unarmed.

The handshake has been a part of business since the dawn of commerce and is too entrenched to be replaced, says University of Iowa management professor Greg Stewart, who recently completed a study confirming that a firm handshake at a job interview is as helpful as a dead-fish handshake is detrimental. The study is scheduled to be published in the September issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology.

Fist bumps did not come up during the research, but Stewart strongly discourages them at job interviews.

The guy got money to study handshakes in job interviews?

  1. JimD says:

Historically, handshakes were used at meetings to show that one did not carry a weapon, but a “bump” is with a Closed Fist !!! A sign of our more violent times ?

  2. the answer says:

[Ed. Removed by author request] Yeah, way to be out of touch of society. I was doing this in high school ( before it was cool )

  3. Dallas says:

It’s clearly an informal, casual way of expressing acknowledgment – and much more sanitary.

Hint for Republicans trying to learn it:
    (1) Do not grab the other persons fist
    (2) Perfect alignment is not necessary
    (3) Do not swing in a punching motion

  4. the answer says:

P.S. In fact I am pissed at myself for even giving out the actual name of it. Dvorak, can you blank out the actual name for me ? thanks.

  7. richardbt says:

#2 & 4 – the answer: I never heard it called anything with the word pound until the early 90’s. In the 70’s, we called it knuckle bumping. But it doesn’t matter.

  8. Cap'nKangaroo says:

and the professor will now ask for money to determine if wearing clean clothes to a job interview improves the applicants chances

Hint for Republicans trying to learn it:
    (4) Do not offer to bend over or adjust your stance.
    (5) It’s a terrorist fist bump.

  10. moondawg says:

    we just call it “knucks.”

HOWEVER, if instead you use an up/down motion, touching the bottom of your fist to the top of the other person’s fist, and then reciprocate, it is called “taters.”

  11. soundwash says:

not to rain on anyone’s parade…but since the world revolves around NYC (according to us anyway)

    a quick history lesson..

i’m born and raised in manhattan, living in the bronx atm. -parental units are still in manhattan,
mom on the east side, dad on the west..

-informally, the only thing i’ve ever heard it referred to is “yo, gimme some love” -but i’ve never it heard called anything particular on the street)

the reason it was formed was so that we could greet each other without the undercover cops
(called DT’s, TNT or 5-0) accusing us of passing drugs to one another.

typically near the end of the of the month when quotas had to be met, TNT (Tactical Narcotics Team) would throw us up against a wall and pat us down in a heartbeat if they saw us shake hands. -stating an “observation sale” as the reason for the pat down if they found something (or planted something. -most of us had in fact, perfected the art of passing money and other unmentionables off in what looks like standard “street” handshake.)

i know that the cops do this in the south bronx as well (hunts point area) -and the bump is used there as the standard greeting for the same reason.

so imo, calling this the “obama fist bump” is gross negligence on media’s part. as usual they have no f’n clue about anything but what scripts in front of them say..

-nonetheless, now you know why this type of “handshake” was formed.

    >>Actually, I’ve heard this called
    >>the “terrorist bump” since the recent
    >>commotion. Pretty funny.

That must be because Barack HUSSEIN Obama did it, and he must be related to Saddam HUSSEIN. And everybody knows that Saddam HUSSEIN was responsible for 9/11, which makes him a terrorist. And any of his blood kin must be terrorists too.

    Is that about right?

Man, O Manischewitz. There’s no end to the useful information you can get from Fox News.

  14. mike cannali says:

Actually I would prefer NOT to see Obama give Chief Justice Roberts one after the oath of office – I’d much rather see McCain do it.

    >>Everyone just assumes that since BHO is so
    >>far to the left, that he won’t stand up to
    >>the terrorists.

No, DittoHeads and Fox “news” fans assume that, because that’s what they’re told.

Everybody with an IQ bigger than their shoe size knows that he’ll protect America.

That would distinguish him from Dumbya (and presumably McBush), who has been the biggest boon to world-wide terrorism civilization has ever known.

Bow down and worship, submissive. Or you’ll get a spanking.

  16. rectagon says:

For people with OCD this could be a real blessing. Howie Mandel is a big fan of the FB apparently.

  17. admfubar says:

ok so what president will do (or has done) the bump and grind…….???

  18. JimD says:

    #17 – Mr. Mustard,

Yeah, I’m sure Obama WON’T BE ON VACATION WHILE “TERRORISTS” MOVE AGAINST AMERICA, and I’m sure Obama will READ HIS PRESIDENTIAL DAILY BRIEFINGS, unlike the IDIOT SON OF AN ASSHOLE currently PLAYING AT BEING “President” !!!
