Just bolt all passengers into one of these

Washington Times – Politics, Breaking News, US and World News – “Want some torture with your peanuts?” by Aviation Security — Will this sort of insane idea cease someday soon? Geez.

A senior government official with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security DHS has expressed great interest in a so-called safety bracelet that would serve as a stun device, similar to that of a police Taser®. According to this promotional video found at the Lamperd Less Lethal website, the bracelet would be worn by all airline passengers.

This bracelet would:

  • take the place of an airline boarding pass
  • contain personal information about the traveler
  • be able to monitor the whereabouts of each passenger and his/her luggage
  • shock the wearer on command, completely immobilizing him/her for several minutes

Watch crazy video here.

  1. JimD says:

I think we NEED TO ABOLISH DSH AS SOON A POSSIBLE !!! Created by the REPUKES, despite their distaste for “big govenment”, they have established AN AMERIKAN NATIONAL SS !!! Time to PUT AN END TO THIS MADNESS !!!

  2. The Alfer says:

This EMD braclet is retarded. First I don’t think this will happen, but you never know. This would never work in practice anyway. By the time some air marshal figures out what frequecy the terrorist is on to zap him the plane may already be blown up, unless the remote hits everbody at once. Perhaps the simplest thing would be to just take or cut the bracelet off just before the terrorist yells “Allah Akbar”. I’m sure these terrorist guys would be able to figure that out. What a dumb idea.

  3. deowll says:

I suppose they could just zap everybody.

I no longer think traveling by plane is cool. It’s more like a pain. Maybe fast rail service is the answer.

  4. Mark Parker says:

In the heat of the moment, how will the “security professional” in control of the shock button be able to discern wannabe terrorists from regular passengers? The video gives the impression that passengers are not effected, only the terrorist. Hundreds of bracelets would be involved in every flight.

Also, whoever has control of the remote control has control of the passengers, thus the plane. A well planned terrorist operation would simply include taking charge of the remote control. If this device had been operable during Flight 93,the famous intervention by passengers would have been impossible and that plane would have likely hit its intended target.

It’s pure idiocy. Hard to believe that this isn’t a hoax.

  5. Improbus says:

This “official” needs to be run out of town on rails. On the other hand, does this strike anyone as a trail balloon to gauge public reaction?

  6. dejavuyou says:

does this idiot really have any idea that we haven’t lost anything to the terrorists.

i think of these assholes everytime i take my sandals off a put them on the conveyor belt and wonder if someone believes we’ve lost.

I know it’s a brutal way to think, but it may take a whole generation to undo the paranoia of the current people in charge.

but then again, we did do air raid drills in school back than.

    hmmmmmmm….

  7. That video is fucking sick.

I can’t believe they got a Canadian guy to do the voice-over.

I’m losing respect for our neighbors to the north. Gak!

  8. chuck says:

How far will we go until we get to the point where passengers are fully sedated, stripped, tied up and then simply loaded onto the plane like baggage?

Actually that doesn’t sound too bad. You arrive at the airport, get drugged, pass out, and wake up in the “arrivals/recovery” room at your destination.

  9. Dave W says:

Well, what do you expect from a method of travel that practically involves a strip search before boarding?

Happily, I have not had to fly anywhere in about 10 years. And I refuse to unless it is absolutely necessary.

  10. chuck says:

The video repeats about how existing security could not have stopped the 9/11 terrorists.

This is not really true. At the time the existing security would have stopped the terrorists if it had actually been enforced. Carrying sharp knives or box cutters has never been allows by either the old or current security rules.

What’s not mentioned is that the 9/11 terrorists could have been easily stopped if the door to the flight deck had been closed and locked at all times.

This should be the policy today: the door should remained closed and locked during the entire flight. In the event of any emergency the pilot should land the plane as quickly as possible and then let security on the ground handle the situation.

  11. MikeR says:

Be it resolved that from henceforth all new security devices/procedures must undergo a six month trial period using nothing but ‘senior government officials’ before being released to the public.

  12. JimD says:

And wait till hackers figure out how to BROADCAST THE “SHOCK” SIGNAL !!! Fun and Games at the Airport, and LAWSUITS FOR EVERYBODY !!!

  13. Awake says:

    Hera are some more ideas.

    – Add harnesses like those on roller coasters to every seat, unlockable only by flight attendants. It would help during an airplane crash as a restraint device. And they could double as ‘flotation devices’ (has a ‘flotation device’ EVER been used in a modern airliner???)

    – Give everybody a double dose of Nyquil 30 minutes before takeoff. Sleep well, can’t aim a gun worth a darn.

    – Quick release handcuffs. Everybody gets attached to their seat, and the handcuffs get released on command or by a sensor like that in an airbag.

    – Use TWO beverage carts, effectively restricting all movement throughout the aircraft.

    – Use United airlines flight attendants as a model for all flight attendants. One look from their surly obnoxious flight attendants is enough to terrify any terrorist.

In the long run, it won’t matter. Flying will become so horribly inconvenient thatit be de-facto torture, and even terrorists will say “blow myself up with a vest of C4? Yes! Flight to Orlando? Nooooooooo! Noooooooo!”

  14. kanjy says:

What’s to stop a terrorist from getting the remote control to the bracelets, turning it up to kill, and electrocuting everyone on the plane?

  15. Likes2LOL says:

In both the Flight 93 and Richard “Shoe Bomber” Reid cases, it was the passengers who thwarted the terrorist activity.

Wouldn’t it make sense to have the seatback safety card include tips on how passengers can fulfill their responsibility for the flight’s safety, e.g., how headphone cords can be used to tie up a perp?

Ideally, airlines should issue a box-cutter to every passenger upon boarding so the terrorists will know there’ll always be an impromptu band-of-brothers with overwhelming force to defend every flight.

  16. SJP says:

Is the airline industry being run by the RIAA?

  17. Nimby says:

Not that I think this idea will ever see the light of day in reality BUT if it did … there’d be a surcharge for it’s use. Wanna bet?

  18. Don says:

The 911 attacks succeeded because passengers were told to act like sheep and they would be fine.

911 cannot happen in todays world because the other passengers will not let it.

Why the continued paranoia? I just don’t get it. The Republicans are just shooting their toes off at this point.

    Don

  19. RASTERMAN says:

Remember the movie ConAir. Just chain everyone down with wrist and ankle cuffs, like a prisoner air transport… just be sure to avoid letting anyone use the toilet!

    Problem solved.

Implement a bracelet such as this and watch the airlines die a rather quick death.

I know I would never again step foot in an airport.

    Ridiculous!

    Cheers!

  20. Freyar says:

My eyes rolled out of my head when they mentioned Terrorism or 9/11 for the fifth time.

It’s just an advertising gimmick that is somehow working on the person making these decisions. I’ll tell you what, I’d rather take a train than have an EMD bracelet that can be completely abused strapped to my wrist.

I do *NOT* trust the airline workers, I do *NOT* trust even the TSA. How do they expect me as a paying customer to react to being constantly under a threat of EMD and possibly even physical injury?

  21. BrianApilot says:

Bracelets? As mentioned by others, that would be difficult too isolate and control by the flight attendants and potentially could be used against the passengers by the bad guys. I have a “better” idea.

Collars. Low yield, explosive collars. See the movie “Wedlock”. Every passenger gets one as a boarding pass. Once the boarding door is closed, the system is armed. The passenger briefing includes a warning not to cross the well-marked line in the forward cabin, near the cockpit door. Otherwise….pop!

Another reason to turn off your electronic devices when you are on the plane!

    Glad I’m a private pilot!

  22. sigh says:

If even cops are too stupid to be trusted with tazers, what hope is there that a flight attendant will be any more responsible?
“His tone of voice made me nervous, so I had to shock him for 5 minutes straight, I didn’t know it would kill him!? I just wanted him to calm down.”
Keep torture devices out of the hands of morons IMO.

  23. Jennifer says:

It makes me nauseous just to know someone is considering this.

  24. Thinker says:

Wow, how well do you think the airlines would handle a 50% drop in passengers?

  25. Jamie says:

Obviously this was well researched and thought through [/sarcasm]

So, as soon as they board the plane, all they have to do is slip a piece of electrical insulation between the bracelet and their skin. So now they’re immune, all of the other passengers get immobilized when they start to act – which should make it easier for them to take over the aircraft. Their high-tech security device foiled by a piece of flexible plastic.

  26. PeterR says:

#17: So, as soon as they board the plane, all they have to do is slip a piece of electrical insulation between the bracelet and their skin.

Nah, the TSA will just ban insulating materials in your carry-on luggage. Or ban all carry-ons (except zapper bracelets).

If they simply banned passengers completely, all these problems would be solved…

  27. Erik says:

just rip the thing off before you cause trouble.

  28. Li says:

This device is monstrous. Judging by the video, it is a combined tracking, identification and torture device. What sort of twisted, demonic mind would develop such a thing?

It’s like something out of a bad Star Trek episode of some hellish dystopian planet. These are strange times.
