Pat Regan

The grandson of prominent anti-gun campaigner Pat Regan has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing her to death. Mrs Regan, 53, was discovered at the property on Marlborough Grange in the Hyde Park area of Leeds on Sunday. The mother-of-six started campaigning against gun crime when her son Danny was shot dead in 2002. The 20-year-old man was being held on suspicion of murder, police said.

It is thought he had been arrested earlier in the day over another stabbing. A 45-year-old railway worker was treated in hospital for a stab wound to his arm after challenging a man for trespassing at Leeds station on Sunday morning, British Transport Police said.

Mrs Regan set up a Leeds branch of Mothers Against Guns after her son Danny, 25, was shot at his home in Haydock, near St Helens, Merseyside in December 2002. His killer has not been found. She had met government officials to discuss how to tackle the problems of guns and gang-related crime. Dee Edwards, co-founder of campaign group Mothers Against Murder and Manslaughter, said Mrs Regan would visit schools and give talks about the dangers and consequences of getting involved in crime. She said: “She made such a big difference to so many people’s lives. This is an absolute tragedy for so many people.” Mrs Edwards said she had known Mrs Regan for about six years and described her as the “most incredible woman”.

“It’s just the most dreadful news for everyone. She’s just an amazing woman,” she added.

I have noticed in the British press lately quite a few murders by stabbing, as well as a proposal for a ban on kitchen knives.

You’re entitled to your opinion. And you never answered any of the questions.

I’ve lived in countries with gun control and without.

It is WAY safer in countries WITH control.

If anyone tells you otherwise, they’re BSing you.

  3. bobbo says:

#84–Wanker==I hear you saying you support gun ownership in order that if our country turns into a fascist state and has ghetto’ized a minority and is starting to deport them to camps, you want to be able to have a shoot out? Not complicated==just nuts.

I suspect in disaster areas the government does have a “right” to confiscate private guns for public safety–ie, in order for guns not to be stolen by criminals and used against relief efforts AND indeed for citizens not accused of anything not to be able to do the same.

If that right does exist, it should be exercised on honest evaluation of the given situation presented with–not a programatic response. If the cops recognize they can’t control an area–for the safety of more people they should take all guns.

Think of the old west with everyone armed and protecting themselves from everyone else and bears and getting food/income with them. When you go to town, to civilization, you check your guns in with the sheriff. He protects you. Lots of problems with that, but not as bad a problem as all those idiots in town with guns.

    Nothing has changed.

    You do?

I must have missed that bit of firearms etiquette in the history books. Are you saying sheriffs were the law-enforcement equivalent of the coat-check girl??

  5. bobbo says:

#95–Mustard, yes, that was a case of verbal diarrhea and I was thinking of tv shows. Not historically based. But why can’t I have my myths??? Not any worse than a guns stopping a fascist USA government–which appears very little on tv.

Different standards must be explained. As always, thanks for nudging me towards the accuracy zone.

  6. Mister Mustard says:

    >>Not any worse than a guns stopping a
    >>fascist USA government

Bobster, I’m sure that in a full-out war between the facist USA government and American citizens, the citizens would lose. That’s not the point.

What a tragedy… poor woman. May her soul rest in peace.
    Amen

  8. Mr. Gawd Almighty says:

    #90, Wanker,

Q: Was it a legal action?

A: It was the right thing to do…
That was not the question. You have never answered it. And I dont think YOUR [sic] slow.

Jag answered it. Only he didn’t give the answer you wanted so you can’t spring the trap on him.

I’ll answer. Yes. It was legal for the government to confiscate any and all firearms. In case you missed it, the area was under martial law. The police have the right in times of dire circumstances to control civilian life without a court approval or warrant. This is often seen during snowstorms when the police close roads, fires when police keep people from returning to their own homes, and forced evacuations when there is a train derailment. All legal, and THE RIGHT actions to take for the betterment of all the people.

So why didn’t you go the Gulf region and help defend those helpless Americans from a corrupt government?

  9. MikeN says:

Britain basically outlaws anything that can be used to defend yourself from criminals.

  10. Jakester says:

I savor the irony. Her son was killed cause he was a criminal and she was killed by her criminal grandson. It shows that we have a lot more to fear from genetically predisposition to crime then from some random gun or knife making otherwise upstanding people kill. Gun control people are the ultimate fascist nannies, and I despise them. We have one just like her in our town. Her son was a gangsta and got killed by a rival gang. “So what?” is what most decent people would ask. If she had a modicum of guilt or remorse, she might have gotten depressed over her crummy parenting and lack of morals she passed down to her worthless son. But since she is black, she had to blame something that can be pinned on whitey, so it’s the guns’ fault that her violent criminal son got wasted.
