Guardian Unlimited | World Latest | Chinese PM Seeks Indian Tech Cooperation — FYI.

BANGALORE, India (AP) – China and India should work together to dominate the world’s tech industry, bringing together Chinese hardware with Indian software, China’s prime minister said Sunday.

On a visit to India’s southern technology hub of Bangalore, Premier Wen Jiabao said the two nations should put aside their historic rivalries for the venture and welcome a new “Asian century.”

“Cooperation is just like two pagodas (temples), one hardware and one software,” Wen said. “Combined, we can take the leadership position in the world,” he said.

“When the particular day comes, it will signify the coming of the Asian century of the IT industry,” he said in an address to information technology professionals in Bangalore.

I guess this is the end result of the continued out-sourcing of American IT and manufacturing to these countries.

  2. Ed Campbell says:

I won’t rehash all the statements from the Tech Week held in NYC, last year, followed in review on the Charlie Rose Show; but, a number of participants from Silicon Valley appeared on the program to revisit their conclusions about the future of high tech, worldwide.

It was best put by one CEO when he responded to a question about whether or not he’d recommend the industry to his own kids. Essentially he said that his kids were already old enough to be set in their own careers — but, he expected and hoped his grandkids to be working in high tech in the next 10-20 years. Speaking Chinese as their second language and probably living in Shanghai.

Of the five Tech Industry CEO’s on that particular program, they mutually agreed that, if the participants gathered to review the topics five years hence, three or four of them would probably have their corporate headquarters moved to China, by then.

Last I checked, Indians were not Asian. I’m sure the Indians will be thrilled at this comment.

Then check again, Americans use the term Asians to refer to the race. Most of the world refers to the region and India is commonly called Asian or Southwest Asia. Even the Middle east has a different reference than we use. The quote is very accurate. Few Indians in India would find this insulting as you suggest. But somehow it seems insulting to an American. We find insults everywhere nowadays — part of the PC scene I suppose.

and the illustration glosses as “We’re bolted”?

  6. Matt McConeghy says:

Indians not Asian? He was probably referring to the tectonic plates. China is on the Asian tectonic plate while India is technically on the Australian-Indian tectonic plate. Although they have been colliding for some millions of years, still there’s a difference!

  7. Thomas says:

Well, turns out the (granted) American Heritage Dictionary would be equally confused:

“Asia is the largest of the continents with more than half the world’s population. Though strictly speaking all of its inhabitants are Asians, in practice this term is applied almost exclusively to the peoples of East, Southeast, and South Asia as opposed to those of Southwest Asia such as Arabs, Turks, Iranians, and Kurds who are more usually designated Middle or Near Easterners

If the word “Asian” is used to describe those from the continent of Asia, then what do they use to describe those of the Asian race: oriental?

I presumed it to be offensive because of the way that term is used in the US. Just as Brits would find the term “shag rug” to be comical, so do people in the US presume that calling Indians “Asians” to be offensive as do South Americans take offense at generally not be considered Americans.

You kind of went off the deep end on this one. This has to do with cultural differences not political correctness. I was unaware that Indians considered themselves Asians. That would presume that Russians also think of themselves as Asian which I find to be odd.

  8. r. tatmuller says:

    “Actually, they’re Asian.”
“No they’re not, they are Indian!”
    “You’re wrong – Asian!!”
    etc., etc.
    Who give a squat?
The point is, they are set to eat our lunch.
Why don’t you squabble about how many Chinese you can fit on the head of a pin? That’s equally relevant.
The point is, the big corps and our guv have set us up to take the fall in tech via outsourcing, insourcing, tech transfers, preferential tax treatment and now….sweatships?
This never would be even a glimmer of a possibility without that.
“No, damnit! I TOLD YOU, they are INDIAN INDIAN INDIAN!!!”, natter, natter, natter.
    Gag.
How about Chindian? Does that resolve the dispute?

  9. Pat says:

It shouldn’t matter if Indians are considered Asians or not. Some CEO took a tax break and shipped our jobs to them.

I remember just a couple of years ago while installing the latest Netscape that it was illegal to give this technology away to several countries INCLUDING China.

  10. Thomas says:

Are US American (;->) simply incapable of taking blame for losing jobs moving overseas? Did ever occur to anyone that the reason jobs are being moved overseas is directly related to decisions made by US politicians (both State and Federal) that made US labor less attractive than overseas labor?

To blame this on CEOs trying to cut costs is the height of idiocy. The CEO’s job is simple: raise stockholder value by (presumably) maximizing profits. It is our elected officials and ourselves that we should blame in not making our labor force and our business environment the best means to achieve those goals.

  11. Smith says:

It ain’t a gonna happen. I’m not knocking the intelligence of their population — I’m a firm believer of the bell curve, so they have more than their share of highly intelligent workers. But high tech involves high capital investment and freedom to exchange ideas, something China can’t do and India is piss-poor at.

Is the government of China going to become the new Intel and AMD? Is some firm in India going to replace Microsoft? Don’t confuse service or assembly industries with leadership and innovation.

Does it hurt to see your job exported to foreign countries? Sure, just ask those that use to work in the steel and textile industries. But which country still remains the greatest industrial power in the world?

  12. Sravan says:

Okay boss, it seems you guys are pretty uneducated about India. Most “Asian” culture comes from India. Ever heard of buddhism? Through Tibet which was part of India, India culturally influenced mainland china, and thru the ocean it influenced phillipines and indonesia. Give it it’s due respect amoung it’s asian brotheren. Also many Americans fantisize about indian doing sweatshop style software processing. Just think, to learn how to program you gonna have a degree, if a person has a degree they’re more than qualified in english and have indepth understanding on all major science subjects and India has about 250,000 ofthese every year. So to put it simply, India is gonna have one huge Middle Class very fast very soon. Plus people with colleg degrees won’t agree to work in sweat shop climate. Just check out this video to see India today.
