Need a break from the working, walking, and standing required by the demanding and stressful life you lead?

Well, pack your bags for Houston because NASA wants to pay you $17,000 to stay in bed for 90 straight days.

The bed-rest experiment, to take place in the Human Test Subject Facility of Johnson Space Center, is designed to allow scientists to study some of the effects of microgravity on the human body. We read on the Bed Rest Study website: It’s unclear, however, whether you’ll be allowed to read with a flashlight under the covers. Jokes aside, astronauts who’ve spent lengthy stays in space have suffered serious repercussions. Our bodies have evolved mechanisms to deal with a certain amount of gravitational force–namely, the amount present on Earth; reduce g and blood pools in the feet, muscles atrophy and bones lose their density. It can take astronauts (or cosmonauts) months to readjust to the Earth’s gravitational force.

If you’re still interested, feel free to apply. You’ll have to pass the Air Force medical examination standards and take a blood test, which we assume means that you won’t have any help from recreational drugs to alleviate the boredom of lying prone for 2,160 hours.

While this may be torturous for some, I have several employees that would be perfect for this position.

  1. Dennis says:

Hell, I got a wife that could finally get paid for something she excels at….

  2. Ben says:

Is Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys) doing this experiment?

  3. MotaMan says:

    can you work from home?

  4. t0llyb0ng says:

There’s that “prone” versus “supine” mistake again.

  5. John Paradox says:

Finally, the job I was BORN for!

    J/P=?

  6. Dallas says:

    I’ll do it for $50/hr from 10PM-6:00AM.

Is there a don’t ask, don’t tell policy for this position?

  7. Esteban says:

They’d have to pay me a lot more money than that. Though there’s not much work to do, you have to do it 24/7. That means no breaks where you get up and stretch your legs, or even go out with your friends. If you think of it as working all-day everyday for three months straight, then the math is pretty easy to do. ($17,000 / 90) / 24 = $7.87 per hour. That’s not much more than minimum wage when you figure it like that.

  8. hhopper says:

Prone – Lying with the front or face downward.
Supine – Lying on the back or having the face upward.

Yes, I definitely prefer supine to prone.

  9. stopher2475 says:

Can you get up to go to the bathroom?

  10. jlm says:

kinda low price for destroying your health imo

  11. JimD says:

Soviet Cosmonauts who went on long term missions in space said they NEVER WANTED TO DO IT AGAIN – TOO MANY HEALTH PROBLEMS !!! So long term trips to the Moon and Mars may be off the table for this reason and also for the problem of radiation that the astronauts would be exposed to !!!
