The U.S. Justice Department on Monday approved the proposed $4.22 billion purchase of XM Satellite Radio by Sirius Satellite Radio after concluding a combined XM-Sirius would not harm consumers.
The deal still needs approval from the Federal Communications Commission, which is expected to follow the Justice Department’s lead.
The deal, announced in February 2007, would combine the only two providers of satellite radio in the United States.
Wonder who will panic about brain overload?
Wonder if this means that XM subscribers are going to have the option of listening to Playboy channel again. Joy.
They will have the option to listen to Howard Stern.
Finally! I think big oil company mergers got approved quicker than this one.
The government would have looked like major douche bags if this merger was prevented.
It will be a lot easier when all the media is just owned by one company…. I am sick of always having to choose things….
😀
How does one listen to Playboy on the radio?
time for the stock price to get bloated(er)
Reuters says PURCHASE.
CNN says MERGER.
There is a difference.
Get ready for subscriptions to go up to 19.95 and beyond !!! Someone has to pay for the merger, and it won’t be either Corporation !!!
Have you ever met anyone who is a subscriber to these things?
I am a subscriber. I originally bought it for Howard Stern almost three years ago and I have stayed for commercial free music and other talk shows that i find much more interesting.
I pay $13 a month for two radios (one in each vehicle) and i get to listen to a genres of music not played on commercial radio. I have a weird taste in music, I like hardcore, heavy metal music and 80’s hair rock. Go figure.
My wife listens to a wide variety of music also. I hate when i am in someone else’s car and they have the regular radio on. The constant drivel from the DJ and the 20 minutes of commercials in every hour 9on a good day) drive me insane.
I broadcast the xm signal through my home, for everyones listening. No xm radio in a car. Mostly on watercolors, the jazz station, or channel 165 talk radio.
# 5:
I’d rather choose between two lower price competing options that one monopoly higher price option. I’m not happy about the merger. Lack of competition is a market means the only provider can jack up prices with reduced risk of loosing customers.
I hope they combine for the best of both services.
Yeah, me and just about all of my friends. Just because you live in a box doesn’t mean the rest of the world does too.
i was given a top quality XM rig.. with all the fixins (cables) but i never activated it.. not even for free..
now maybe i’ll hook it up
I do not know about sirus but XM has caused me to liston to music again. It really is not your every day radio. I have it in every room of my home. when you add up the hours of use versus the cost this is for me one of the best values for me.

“It will be a lot easier when all the media is just owned by one company…. I am sick of always having to choose things…”
…yeah it will be just like AM, you turn it on and Douche Limbo is rammed down your throat…
Another sad day in America. Another victory for the corpratocracy.
#13 Would you rather not have either to choose from when they both go belly up because they aren’t making any money. Then you can go back to AM/FM, or iPod. Which is an option even after a merge.
Well, it sure took long enough for Sirius to find out who to (contribute to/bribe) to get this approved. The long approval hold-up just looked like somebody was shaking the money tree until it starting producing.
