I believe topside is called the flight deck.

Hey Pedro, why haven’t you mentioned the dangers of NASA flying certain lithium-ion battery powered devices in space?

  2. The DON says:

They should know better than to leave valuables visible through the window of their vehicle.

  3. moss says:

Setting-up some of the anti-Mac-fanboyz to be blind-sided, eh?

Lithium ion batteries are not certified as safe by NASA; so, they’re replaced by akalines.

  4. joaoPT says:

When is the Shuttle fleet to be de-comissioned?
And what is NASA planning to use next?

  5. Andy says:

So, did replacing the batteries void the warranty on that iPod?

  6. Somebody_Else says:

#4 They’re replacing the shuttle program with the Constellation Program/Orion Spacecraft/Ares Launch Vehicles. It’s being designed for everything from low earth orbit to Mars missions. The first flight is slated for 2014, although the schedule may change depending on when the Shuttle is decommissioned (supposed to be 2010).

It’s one of the few good things we can credit to the Bush administration.

Actually, I don’t recognize that thing.

    #6 Somebody_Else –

Effective 2010 the USA will ‘oficially’ no longer have a manned flight vehicle program.

The Ares Launch Vehicle has failed before its first flight, due to basic design flaws that create excessive vibration. They are basically starting over with the project.

Orion is incapable of carrying a deployable payload, being instead a ‘crew service vehicle’… basically a hollow tube and a reentry capsule.

Constellation is the name of a program, not a vehicle.

The whole project is designed around Bush’s moronic “let’s go to Mars” project. It has very little to no ‘Earth orbit’ utility, and hence is in no way a replacement for the shuttle.

In the future the ISS will be serviced ONLY by Russian space craft… how’s that for adding another feather in the cap of our ‘great leader’.

I never said that Constellation was a vehicle, I said it was the new program.

The Ares hasn’t failed, there are three designs currently in testing. Ares I (the crew launch component) has the vibration issue, but NASA has since said they have corrected the problem for the next round of testing. Ares IV (the medium lift vehicle) and Ares V (the heavy lift vehicle) are completely on track.

Because of the modular design and separate crew/cargo vehicles the Ares vehicles can move more crew and cargo to the ISS. It’s both cheaper and more capable than the Shuttle.

You are correct about not having a spacecraft from 2010-2014, assuming they retire the Shuttle as scheduled.

  10. joaoPT says:

    Assuming that…
Maybe time has come to globalize space travel…IMHO NASA could just subcontract European and/or Russian Space programs. The cost/benefit of the Ariane, on high end and Russian vehicles on the low end are much better than NASA’s. Also in the time frame, China and India could become viable alternatives.
I know there’s a “National Interest” on maintaining such structures, but at what cost?

i wonder if apple paid for that picture

There are no rap-listening / ghetto-taught / droopy pants & bandana wearing so-called “kids” in the area where they parked, so it is safe 🙂

I guess space is the last ‘normal’ area where people don’t have to worry about being mugged or robbed (yet). So sad.
