The fundraising arm for Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives says its former treasurer is under investigation for the unauthorized transfers of “several hundred thousand dollars” of its funds that appear to have landed in his personal accounts.

The National Republican Congressional Committee said that after it learned bogus financial statements had been submitted to its bank dating back to 2002, it contacted the FBI, which began a criminal investigation.

Christopher Ward, a consultant to the committee and its former treasurer, was dismissed in January. He had worked for the committee since 1995…

The committee’s chairman, Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma, said in a statement, “The evidence we have today indicates we have been deceived and betrayed for a number of years by a highly respected and trusted individual.”

Aren’t all the crooks in Washington “respected and trusted”?

Repukes ***STEAL IN ALL DIRECTIONS*** !!! It’s in their nature !!!

  2. moss says:

Starting with the era of Genrich’s “contract on America”, Republikans have led the charge to the slopping trough. On the take from lobbyists, on the take from special interests with earmarking, is anyone surprised these sleazehounds would steal from each other?

American politicians suck at standards. The Republikan flavor leads the way at establishing new lows..

  3. tchamp2 says:

Republican or Democrat — makes no difference, temptation will always get some people.

It’s sad really, but even as a staunch conservative, I’ve learned that my representatives may vote a good game, but they are human just like the rest of us.

To expect none will do wrong is, well, wrong.

As to #2, if you really think democrats are any different, then I have a really nice bridge in this little town called “brooklyn” that I could give you a GREAT deal on.

  4. Steve-O says:

Obviously it isn’t stealing if you just take $100,000 from someone and put $90,000 of it in your freezer.

tchamp2 is correct in that it is Reps or Dems.

  5. Mister Catshit says:

The difference is this happens a lot more with our Law and Order right wing nuts. Admittedly their transgressions are generally more sexual than larceny, they are not immune to sweetening their bank accounts a little.

    #4, Steve,
As for Representative Jefferson, he has yet to go to trial. I am not defending the man, but he has made a defense. He claims he took the money to be used as payoffs in Africa. While that might not be the most noble reason, at least he didn’t just line his pockets as Bob Taft, Bob Ney, and Duke Cunningham did. Although I don’t agree with Jefferson’s actions (guilty or not), I notice you didn’t mention the other Republican Congressman and Governor who did steal from the public.

  6. Steve-O says:

#5 Mister Catshit – true, I did not mention the plethora of politicians I could have who have stolen or taken bribes.

You mentioned Duke Cunningham, one of my heroes growing up (being a Navy man). He did the crime and now he is doing the time unfortunately Taft isn’t in there with him. (Good reason not to put people up on too high of a pedestal.)

As for Jefferson, stealing or accepting bribe is still illegal and that has to be the most lame ass excuse I have ever heard. Why didn’t he just say he was going to use it to get The President’s limo washed or plant flowers at the capital building.

Screw him and every one of those thieving pieces of shit.

  7. god says:

Tailing off with “a plague on both their houses” has become the most predictable of the several whines from Republican supporters.

The fact remains that you can date a qualitative increase in corruption and cronyism in Congress from the mid-90’s. The thugs left in power in the Republican Party from the reign of George 1st – Hastert, Stevens, Gingridge – used their seniority to expand the take from lobbyists and build earmarks into a way of life and crime.

Playground-level whines – nyah, nyah, your mother wears army shows, too – is what we have grown to expect from those who would defend the indefensible.

  8. Steve-O says:

#7 god – I’m sure that you weren’t directing that to me since I happen to agree with you on the amount of corruption that has increased with the GOP.

I’d like to see a fiscal conservative in the Whitehouse and a super majority of fiscal conservatives in Congress.

Before someone goes off on me I DID NOT say Republicans or Democrats.

  9. SwampGas says:

Well, Jesse Ventura is considering running: http://tinyurl.com/ypzng4 and here’s a mathematical analysis that says he could win: http://www.nolanchart.com/article3132.html

  10. Steve-O says:

#9 SwampGas – Finally, someone I could vote for without holding my nose.

“I ain’t got time to bleed” Ventura
