We covered this latest meat disaster a few weeks back. The coverup continues.

At least 10,000 food distributors sold recalled meat from the shuttered Hallmark slaughterhouse in Chino, CA including ConAgra, General Foods, Nestle and H.J. Heinz and it could still be on store shelves.

But Richard Raymond, USDA undersecretary for food safety, told an incredulous House Appropriation’s agriculture panel this week the information is “proprietary and would not be released.

Naming names could drive customers away and just “confuse” people say trade groups like the American Meat Institute, Food Marketing Institute and Grocery Manufacturers Association.

The Bush Administration also opposes publicizing retailers’ names in meat recalls…

Everything important to a government crony is a “secret” – doesn’t matter who’s at risk.

Thanks, Mister Justin.

It’s all about the $$$$$$$$…. Sad

  3. bobbo says:

So how has Bushco altered the Freedom of Information Act to make this type of information a secret? Its pretty obvious that if something this prosaic is a secret, what else is?

Our government is broken in so, SO, SO MANY WAYS. Just add this to the list plus the fact that nothing will happen to this official, who is, after all, just following orders.

How can you call this a coverup?

Especially when CNN publicizes the list of affected brands and products:

Also, it is none of our business to know who the VP uses on his “Energy Policy” meetings, which resulted in unimaginable record profits for Energy companies.

Or that the lead advisors for the MacCain campaign are mostly owners and board members of lobbying businesses.

Or that unconstitutional spying has been happening since BEFORE 9/11.

    Republican supporters = Ignorant tools.

Benson – are your excuses for corruption such a habit you can’t lose it?

This list you link to – ta da – is the same from Eideard’s original post. Hallmark’s own brands. That has little to do with the other 10,000 distributors and rebranders.

Excepting the school systems in my state [how’s that for a thrill] buying direct from Hallmark, virtually all the branded crap that’s been turned up so far had other labels slapped on.

Can’t trust BushCo and the Repukes !!! Just stop eating MadCowDisease Beef altogether !!! When Beef sales fall off, the Beef Cartel will have to clean up their act !!! Don’t depend or trust the Govt, vote with your dollars !!!

Post #4, I wouldn’t call it a cover-up. I would call it more of a fuck-up. Here are more items not on the CNN list from Feb. 17 which you linked. What should matter here is being able to trust the food supply. Mistakes will likely happen under the best of circumstances. But, jerking around the people who pay the salaries of the officials tasked with protecting the process, passing along bad product as a supplier, retailers and manufacturers giving the mushroom treatment to consumers and avoiding full immediate disclosure when a problem occurs, is just stupid and bad business. It’s not damage control when you find a way to further aggravate a customer who you have already pissed off.

Same with contrails: the gov’t is doing research on us and, as long as they don’t tell us they’re doing research, explaining what they’re doing isn’t a requirement.

  10. pete says:

If served in the congressional cafeteria would explain our of politicians conduct.

  11. Winston Hussein Smith says:

“We’re from the government and we’re here to help you.” Not.

“We’re from the government and we’re here to protect our big business cronies. If they do something that harms you, that’s your tough luck.”

  12. Rick Cain says:

Welcome to Bushie World, where you have no choice but to trust the government.
