More than a quarter of people who bought Apple’s iPhone are using them on wireless networks other than AT&T’s, the exclusive iPhone carrier in the U.S., a “stunning” number that will pressure the company’s business model…
Apple executives said last week the number of unlocked phones was “significant” but declined to give an estimate. Most analysts had estimated the portion of unlocked phones at under 20 percent.
The higher number is worrying for Apple because the company receives a cut of AT&T’s iPhone service fees, revenue that carries a high gross margin and has fueled optimism over its earnings potential…
If Apple cracks down on unlocked phones it could preserve its high margins but miss its sales target, whereas allowing them could erode profitability and make it tough to sign more carriers to similar revenue-sharing deals.
Looking at Apple’s business model – by product, they appear to spend reasonable time planning beyond the near term. This is looking more like a chunk of market space where they’ll be forced into reaction a lot sooner than they projected.
Good for all those “unlockers”. Better yet for everyone (like me) that didn’t buy this overpriced piece of garbage in the first place.
“lmj3325” I second your comment. I have had use of the iPhone a few different occasions and it is not that great of a device.
Leo LaPorte raved on his many programs about how he would only have to carry one device when the iPhone came out. On the last “TWIT” show he admitted he carries an iPhone and a Blackberry, because the iPhone is not as great as a Blackberry. That is really cutting down on carrying to many devices.
Regardless, Apple is stuck with AT&T for another year-and-a-half. Other than that…

Great phone, dumb marketing idea. Knowing apple, they’ll probably choose the revenue hit to keep their customers happy and learn from the experience.
The iPhone hasn’t arrived here yet. Not officially, but some people already have them. And there’s one in every Media-Markt for people to play. Nice screen, and some nifty graphics. Once the novelty of flicking fingers and pinching wears out, people realize it’s not a very nice deal. I’m foreseeing that when it finally starts selling here, it will be outdated. No 3G, and 2mp camera.Nah. I just bought a Nokia N37 for 75 Euro and points trade-in. Awesome deal…

I tried an iPhone at an AT&T store once. I was underwhelmed. To dial (or enter a message) you tap on a flat surface, which gives you no tactile feedback. I was underwhelmed. I have an inexpensive Samsung phone (with buttons that click) that works better than the iPhone did.
Around this part of TN they can all be unlock because only service it will work with is ATT. All we have is Verzion or ATT and Verzion doesn’t support GSM.
I bought 3 iPhones. None for me, but for my friends in Italy. They wanted it as soon as it came out and they unlocked them. They are happy, for now. TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile) will be carrying the iPhone, maybe a 3G version, this year at some point.
Isn’t Apple making some absurd amount on each phone sold? Apple loves making 100% profit on their products, so I suspect that the iPhone is no different.
