The special programme analysed more than 6,000 barks from 14 Hungarian sheepdogs in six different situations.
In a series of tests the team of scientists, from Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary led by Csaba Molnár, discovered that a computer could recognise whether a dog was in a stranger, fight, walk, alone, ball or play scenario.

If your around a dog long enough, you learn these sounds anyway. I knew what my dog wanted by the way he barked, growled, whined, etc.

Yeah, I had the same thought as soon as I read it. And besides that, I think that most untrained humans could recognize what a dog was intending to communicate, if it was limited to just those “scenarios”. So how would computer software be better at it? More likely the dogs learned how to bark to get the computer to understand them, rather than the software learned the dog’s “language”. Dogs communicate more thru body language, than barking. So unless the software had a way of visually distinquishing these patterns, without a human transcribing it, the technology would be seriously flawed. For example, front forelegs on the ground means “play”. There’s no bark for that.
