Any good sportsman, though, couldn’t miss a distinctly Cheneyesque moment in the press accounts of the former Arkansas governor’s morning hunt: At one point, Huckabee’s party turned toward a cluster of reporters and cameramen and, when they kicked up a pheasant, fired shotgun blasts over the group’s heads.
This, friends, is dangerously bad hunting form.
Perhaps Huckabee missed hunter’s safety classes – Arkansas only requires them for hunters born after 1968 – but the etiquette on this point is clear. “Never point a firearm at yourself or others,” the International Hunter Education Association declares in its Basic Safety Rules. Later, it adds, “Never point your firearm at something you do not intend to shoot. Make sure you positively identify what you are shooting at and know what lies in front of and beyond it.”
Huckabee emerged happily from his hunt, three dead pheasants in tow, Oliphant reports. Asked for a metaphor to describe the hunt, he replied, “Don’t get in my way. This is what happens.”
What is it with these guys and their “hunting”. Do they need a photo-op to show us how tough they are by shooting birds? Maybe this makes them appear tough on “terrorism”. |
I’m neither a Republican nor a gun nut – don’t own one myself – but I have been hunting and it was a very rewarding experience. You’re right about the safety and photo-op sides of it, but politicians are always doing nutty things for a headline. Loved the Elmer Fudd image. Maybe we should pick the lawmakers thru a lottery – couldn’t do any worse than what we have now.
What is it with these guys and their “hunting”.
Small dicks.

Speak for yourself, #2.
He probably hasn’t had an opportunity to hunt in a while, got invited, and accepted. I’m with #1…hunting is a primal experience, one we should all try sometime. Getting my first whitetail made me re-examine my place on this earth, it was not fun at one special point I’ll leave to your imagination, and the gross factor was so strong that I don’t hunt nearly as hard anymore. And don’t come back with any of that sissy “defenseless animals” BS. No animal is defenseless…ever try to catch a deer or bear? If animals had guns every hunter would be dead. And BTW, if we don’t hunt the deer a LOT more humans will die on the roads, and the habitat will be destroyed. The only alternative is we could bring back their natural predators! Anyone interested in camping around cougars? Not me…see SD Zoo story for the obvious reasons.
#2, Gun /owners/ are not the ones equating firearms with dicks. Maybe if you hung out at the truck stop more you would not be so horny that everything reminded you of the company your rectum so desperately desires.
“A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity.” Sigmund Freud
Politicians doing hunting photo ops is supposed to reassure the hunters that the politician will not support laws further restrict hunting (something people driving through parts of Pennsylvania will be glad to hear). It appeals mainly to the fools that think the 2ndA is about duck hunting.
Pheasants and ducks are defenseless…
Geez Olo, why so defensive ? Killing is hard-wired in all mammals. Wouldn’t be here if it weren’t.
Definitely agree with the control aspect, we get 5 to 10 fatalities on the interstate each year. ‘Course the deer take it in the shorts a bit more than that, no one should mess with a tractor-trailer outfit moving at 80 – 90 mph. Not uncommon to count 20 -30 roadkill within a 150 to 200 mile stretch. Don’t forget CWD or chronic wasting disease that’s been linked to over population of deer herds. I’m no expert on the disease but, I understand it’s similar to bovine spongiform or mad cow disease and GFP posts warnings to folks to not eat deer in areas where they have found deer that have died from this (CWD). I have a few great memories of the mule and white tail. Mostly the eating kind of memories as the hunting has those annoying details you allude to at the end of the hunt.
Cheers to you this New Years !
Sorry, I’m a little fired up today. 🙂
#5: Pheasants have at least two excellent defense mechanisms…one is camouflage, the other is the ability to get a little higher in the air than you or me, and go a bit faster. 😉 When you get close to a pheasant and it lights, the sudden flapping will scare the crap right out of you. Every time. Same for most ducks. No animal is defenseless…only extinct ones.
Well, I’d say that’s pushing it when they are against a shotgun.
#3, #4: Here’s some band-aid for your hurt feelings.
#5, Philleep,

What does “hanging out” at a truck stop have to do with having a small dick? Although, as you attacked the messenger instead of the message, I’ll just chalk up your intimate knowledge of what your rectum so earnestly desires and may be available at truck stops.
“A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity.” Sigmund Freud
Never said by Freud. In other words, a made up quote. In words you understand, goo goo, ga ga.
I second Jag’s comment.
I’ve got a pretty big dick and love guns. Don’t hunt though. Just thought I’d share…
This is just another performance.
Just like going to church, kissing babies, talking tough and decorating people with medals.
We have no politicians that would actually do something real and benefical to the population.

I grew up in the city and was opposed to hunting until I tried it. I only hunted birds, but we ate everything we caught. When you think about it, hunting is much more humane than buying a grocery store chicken. Their lives are miserable from start to end. The hunted bird’s last six seconds kind of suck, but the rest of it’s life was lived free.
I don’t mind hunters and I don’t mind people who hate hunting. What I can’t stand are the hypocrites who say they are opposed to hunting but still eat meat. I guess the meat bought in the stores was never defenseless?
Catshit, Freud said that in “General Introduction to Psychoanalysis”. I don’t have the page number as the PDF is over 22M.
I totally agree with what Cursor said above. It’s all an act. All part of the checklist they go through to get votes.
As a kid I hunted a lot. Then after my time in the service I found little adrenaline rush from shooting rabbits and pheasants. Deer and bear even. After hunting a quarry that could shoot back, they seemed so tame.
Maybe that is the reason the republican contenders and current office holders with the exception of Senator McCain get so much pleasure out of shooting at and killing small animals. They never experienced the thrill of killing an animal that was trying to kill you. Maybe little dicks and little bird hunters do go together.
#19 – You have a refreshing perspective. 🙂
#12 – Cursor_ – This is just another performance.
Bingo.
#17 – OhForTheLoveOf
Absolutely. I would like to see these brave hunters go hand-to-paw with a bear.
#18 – Mister Catshit
And if Phillep really had the PDF, why couldn’t he press CTRL-F and find it? Shouldn’t be too hard.
#19 – qsabe
But we all know that rabbits are terrorists… 😉
“Freud associates retarded sexual and emotional development … with fear and loathing of weapons.”
Good enough for me.
Hunting CAN play an important part in the management of wildlife but I won’t argue the point.
I only want to know: Did he EAT the three birds he killed.
If he did, three cheers and a big okay with me.
If he did not, even if he gave the birds to someone else who ate them, then he’s hunting for the blood sport and that’s a big no-no.
I’m betting, he did NOT eat the birds, doesn’t know what happened to them, and doesn’t care.
Is there a link to the source for this? I can’t find any in the article…or am I just blind and missed it?
Well, Hunter, I’m on dial up. I did not download 22M. You can find the pdf in Google books.
Catshit, your post actually tended to support the claim, and lend credence to the probability that he said something like that, even if the specific quote is incorrect.
Oh, and back up thread, Hunter’s comment that hunters had small dicks was not a personal attack on someone? (Or an admission… hmmm.)

If he’d aimed lower, he’d have my vote.
#24 – Phillep
Read this.
#26 – MikeN – If he’d aimed lower, he’d have my vote.
😀
#25, Philleep,
No it doesn’t. You wrongly attributed a quote to someone who never said it. That is falsifying. A common practice among the right wing nuts. To simply dismiss it as close is even more wrong. Freud said nothing along those lines. The quote, though still incorrect, is more accurately attributed to Professor Kates.
If you can find a quote by Freud that accurately reflects those sentiments then great. It won’t change your previous blatant error. The problem with Freud is he pioneered psychiatry, but all his theories have since been surpassed with better science and knowledge. Freud made a lot of anecdotal pronouncements but did little actual research.
Politicians always hunt to satisfy the 2nd amendment types. Funny how they don’t ever do anything to satisfy the 1st amendment people, even though there’s a reason its the FIRST amendment. The founding fathers didn’t number it that way by accident.
