Poland plans to open its first exorcism center, for those who believe they are possessed by the devil, in the town of Poczernin 30 km (18 miles) from the city of Szczeczin, Polish media said Wednesday. Andrzej Trojanowski, a Catholic priest working in the city says the center will be equipped with a chapel and will have a psychiatrist on hand. Trojanowski said there was a demand for the service as he deals with up to 20 people a week allegedly possessed by the devil.

The center was the idea of the Catholic Church in Poland, which already has around 50 working exorcists, and the project is expected to provide spiritual help and guidance to the needy. According to priests their service is popular with visitors from Germany, which has no working exorcists.

Many consider those who claim to be possessed are just mentally ill, whereas others contend that those diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses are really possessed by the devil. The practice of exorcism by priests and clergy became very popular in the 1970s, which coincided with the 1973 release of the world-wide blockbuster

20 people a week? What the HELL is going on in Poland.

I wonder if they are hiring for witch pricker.

  2. Greg Allen says:

I’ve personally experienced primitive cultures of most of the world’s religions and they all seems to have some sort of concept of demon possession.

Clearly, this concept of an outside entity violating one’s body is an intuitive way to understand mental illness or other personal problems.

And before we westerners feel smugly superior to them, I have to point out that we have our own updated version of this: alien abductions, “MPD,” out-of-body experiences, etc.

Seems all the same, to me.

  3. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

In true cases of demon possession, the first thing the demon does is make you believe that you’re NOT possessed, so anyone who believes they have NO demon should go to this clinic immediately. Don’t put it off another second, and don’t worry — these people are professionals.

  4. Dallas says:

I found the most effective way to rid the body of powerful demons is to masturbate. This is only good for about 24hrs. Then, they are back. It’s a vicious cycle.

  8. Glenn E. says:

Well as long it’s just the church doing this, and not a publically funded deal. You can choose not to pay your church to run something like this, if you don’t believe in it. You can’t choose not to pay your taxes (and stay out of jail) for funded projects you don’t believe in. Like Wars, a Space Station, corporate subsides, corporate welfare, etc. At least the Pols have a choice. We in the US don’t. (“What?! I don’t believe in the Space Program? No, NASA isn’t my chosen religion. Why should I pay taxes for a something I don’t believe in, that only promises to cure our ills, if we invest in its miracles?”)
