    Holden is an old Australian car manufacturer who were bought by GM in the 1940’s. They basically assemble local homologations suited to tough Australian road conditions from the GM parts bin. Kind of like Saab and Jaguar, but cheap and sturdy. This particular model is the “commodore” utility. They also sell saloon and coupe versions, which incidentally are pushed along by the same monstrous engine as the current Chev Corvette. I prefer French cars myself.

    Its an Australian company now owned by GM. Remember the new GTO from a few years ago? That was a rebranded Holden.

    That was a cool commercial.

    BTW… speaking of cool Aussie Ute TV ads. Ford Falcon Ute competes head-to-head with Holden Commodore Ute in Australia. The Ford ads for their XR6 and XR8 Utes are awesome too.

    NOT a truck, over here we call it a Ute, not the same at all. We also have GM ‘Pickups’ (branded Holden) & Ford (F series) ‘trucks’, soooo not the same.

    It’s basically a sedan with the rear end (from the front door posts usually, though some are making utes with 4 doors now called twin cabs) replaced with a tray and sides.

    This is an aussie ute (utility), translated for our American guests means, does 2 things. A casual car during the weekend and a work horse during the week. A couple of facts about these utes..
    1/. Both Ford and Holden (GM affiliate) produce these utes, they range from base models to high end performance models.
    2/. The fastest ute in the world is the Maloo, a high performance Holden ute, made by a high performance company called HSV. This is a very cool ute and very very fast, good for about 185mph depending on options.

    I dare not take a guess at GM’s motives, but I have heard the rumor that when Holden was bought the deal said that GM could only take outside the country what holden lets them take out of the country, dunno if it is true or not (considering almost everything is taken out and rebranded) but according to GM, Americans want ‘gas guzzlers’ and us Australians want ones that don’t chew so much fuel.

    and please, if anyone in the car companies reads this, we don’t need your SUV’s over here, you can’t maneuver them, they chew tons of money and they feel like a F**ing tank. No one I know drives a tank. Period.

    There’s a very good (for them) reason; pickups are the least labor-intensive + lowest parts count = most profitable vehicles they make.
