Have you seen this one?
Now we just need an over-lay of the red/blue maps from the last election!
That should really highlight the split between rural and urban voting preferences. 🙂
And God said, “Let there be light…”
…and, finally, darkness could be understood.
Actually so much light in the cities is bad if you happen to like to look at the stars. Urban astronomy is next to impossible in or near most big cities all over the world (impossible near Lisbon, Portugal, where I live). I remember when, as a kid, I could see the stars from my house, but not for the past 10/15 years. How can you show the stars to the kids if there’s none to be seen? Maybe there’s kids around who never seen stars!
There’s an international association dedicated to this issue, called the International Dark Sky Association. The site is

There are much better lighting fixtures designed to put the light where it is needed rather than up into space. Not only is this a waste of money and natural resources it ruins the night sky.
Before you buy your next porch light check out the International Dark- Sky Association. Their mission “To protect and restore the natural nighttime environment and our heritage of dark skies.”

That image is also ten years old, compiled from data taken in 1994 and 1995. Think what it would look like now.
