Interestingly, half of those pumps in error were to the consumer’s benefit. Given today’s prices — especially if you still have a gas guzzler — this could translate into a significant amount of money. How bad (or good) are your state’s pumps?

34 percent of area gas stations fail pump tests in last three years

When South Florida drivers buy gasoline, they trust they are getting what they pay for at the pump. But that’s not always the case.

Some gas pumps break down, shortchanging consumers. Others malfunction in ways that give customers more than they pay for. And in some cases, experts and state regulators say gas pumps are deliberately altered.

In South Florida, 34 percent of the gas stations inspected in the past three years had at least one gas pump that failed accuracy tests used to determine if the devices are giving consumers the correct amount of gas they pay for, a South Florida Sun-Sentinel analysis found.

About time this gas pump fraud in Florida was exposed. Seems the majority nailed by inspectors were moslem operators.

Worshiping Allah is no substitute for proper pump maintenance.

  3. GigG says:

I remember a news story with pretty much the same thing in another state a few years back. The thing was they new that when the pumps were tested they did it with 5 and 10 gallon tanks. The error was programed in so that at those two volumes the pumps would be correct.

The story explained that one station that had several complaints against it was checked on more than one occasion and only got caught when the inspector filled up his car after the inspection.

  4. Not Lauren the Ghoti says:

None of the operators were charged as the State put it all down to machine error. Hey, it happens. As I read the article, I couldn’t find what the allowable tolerance is. In my experience, these pumps have most likely just lost their calibration slightly and we read about the extreme cases.

The analysis found 580 of more than 2,500 stations in South Florida had at least one pump dispensing more gas than customers paid to purchase, while 477 provided less fuel than they should.

It goes in line with the abundance of crooked old folk living there.
