Ars Technica – October 4, 2007:

Internet Explorer 7 was a long time coming, and with the rise in popularity of Firefox, expectations were high. One thing that most users didn’t expect, however, was an additional Windows Genuine Advantage check, baked into every copy of the installation routine for IE7. Now, according to a post on Microsoft’s IE blog, this WGA check is going away with the latest IE7 update, at least for Windows XP users.

The inclusion of a separate WGA check for IE7 was always a bit odd. One imagines that, rather than searching for a “cracked” version of IE7, most of these people would simply download a free browser such as Firefox.

I’ve never updated from IE6 since I use Firefox (XPSP2). I tried the IE7 download, then restored the system from a full backup since IE7 was a total buggy POS. Only a few times must I use IE — like getting the darned Tuesday updates from M$ for XP.

Gotta love that “M$ Genuine Disadvantage!”

I am rather pleased that DRM and other onerous anti-piracy controls that just prove to be very annoying seem to be gradually losing steam.

/Although I don’t use IE, nor like it at all

  7. Cinaedh says:

People pirated IE7? Really? You gotta be kidding!

That would be like stealing three pounds of crap stored in a two pound bag, wouldn’t it?

  8. RBG says:

What is M$ thinking anyway? I purchased 2 computers from a local shop and didn’t really question the Windows XP it came with. But I quickly clued in when the new Windows Media I downloaded wouldn’t work without that WGA check. That was the end of Windows Media for me. And I’m sure millions of others.

  11. Eaze says:

Are they going to remove the WGA from Windows Media Player 11 as well?
