X-Files Tunguska

I wonder if the cigarette smoking man was involved?

Mystery illness strikes after meteorite hits Peruvian village – AFP: Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.
Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.
Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a “strange odor,” local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.
Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.
Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.
“Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned,” he said.

Wasn’t that a recent theme in the “Alley Oop” cartoon?

  2. BillM says:

Probably not a meteorite according to SpaceWeather.com

    http://www.spaceweather.com/

No seismic activity detected in the area.

  3. Mark Derail says:

I guess our Nibiru Overlords are early this 3,600 years around.

Also known as The Twelfth Planet or Planet X, some are warning that this wandering body is quickly nearing the Earth – and could cause global devastation. Should you worry?

Nah, I won’t worry over this just yet.

  4. Spok says:

Logic dictate either a star destroyer garbage ball which spread the toxic fumes, or another documented case of mass hysteria.

  5. Improbus says:

That sounds more like a volcanic vent than a meteorite. A volcanic vent would explain the smell and other symptoms.

  6. bill says:

    Kryptonite!

  7. Next will come the ‘Giant Creature out of the Swamp”
If it was a biological entity wouldn’t the heat of reentry killed the bacteria , virus, insect or reptile ?

All I have to say is “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill”

Has anyone checked to see if any Chinese satellites are missing?

  10. Smartalix says:

I can’t believe we haven’t gotten an “Andromeda Strain” joke yet.

  11. GregA says:

Am I the only one who, other than the obvious humantarian implcations, think that a meteor strike causing a zombie plage would be the coolest thing ever?

  12. jlm says:

“Has anyone checked to see if any Chinese satellites are missing?”

    lol

  13. Angel H. Wong says:

That’s no meteorite! That’s a gigantic lump of frozen turds from Air Force 1.

  14. Mark Derail says:

#11, nah, finding out we were bio-engineered to be slaves & soldiers to the Nibiru, way way cooler!

  15. Stefan says:

Do any of them have super powers?

  16. GregA says:

Does being a Nibiru space marine involve off planet duty? Because if it does, they wont have to subdue me, I will volunteer.

  17. Edgardo says:

Number 13, hilarious. Either that or a spy plane jettison some ordenance along the way.

    lol

  18. Watcher says:

#13 – Can’t be a frozen turd from AF1. The only turd on that plane big enough to cause that much damage has since been seen in DC.

  19. tallwookie says:

I’m betting that the aliens who arrived on the asteroid took a wrong turn at alberqueque…

  20. Li says:

#5 is on the right track, I think. Noxious gasses and newly flowing boiling water seems more like a volcanic event. It seems this story has also been picked up by Reuters and Scientific American, who has a picture!

    http://tinyurl.com/2ywjbt

It’s a big hole in the ground, whatever happened, and the surrounding area looks as if it as been exposed to a blast.

  21. Gasparrini says:

How strange that nobody commented on the reference to the X-Files episode ‘Tunguska’, which explains the picture I chose for the post. I guess too much time has passed since the X-files ended.

  22. Glenn E says:

When it happened in Northern California, it was a volcano. But when it happened in Peru, it’s blamed on a UFO or meteor. It all about what they want to believe in. And that’s why they’re so screwed up down there. Because they’re looking for too much of a supernatural explanation, to everything that happens to them. The results of a poor educational system (if any). But at least they got their Saints!
