Lenovo unwraps Reserve Edition ThinkPad | Reg Hardware — Interesting item, I’d say.
It’s been 15 years since IBM first unveiled the ThinkPad laptop and about two years since Lenovo acquired it as part of a $1.25bn spending spree. So, in an attempt to capitalise on its purchase, Lenovo has unveiled a leather-bound, 5000-unit limited edition ThinkPad.
Last time I checked leather wasn’t good at dissipating heat. I guess form over function wins in this situation.
$5,000 for:
(1) An oddball leather wrap.
(2) Answer-the-f’in-phone “Executive Support” (BS marketing) THAT YOU SHOULD BE GETTING ANYWAY, FROM ALL MANUFACTURERS.
Lenovo: Stuff the OVERPRICED laptop and the fortune cookie that comes with it.
Fairly powerful little laptop. I’d pay about a kilobuck for it. So, 4 kilobucks for a leather case … hmmm.
Won’t somebody think of the cows.
um, i’m going to go ahead and predict a recall once these all catch fire or at least damage the cpu
I work on these, and all Thinkpads, and as laptops go, they’re well designed, supported, and relatively easy to repair, as much as I hate the fact that IBM sold out to China.
The pricing on laptops really pisses me off. By the time I upgraded the cheap Dell laptop to what I needed, it cost me $4,000.
Lets see…
Laptop that gets hot in the first place…
Wrapped with something that insulates…
Raises HEAT problems…
DUH..
There will be rich suckers who’ll buy this crap… oh, so exclusive… and ridiculously expensive. What did that leather case actually cost to manufacture? $10-15? THIZ_HO… please give us your input.
That’s an ironic oxymoron: a Chinese luxury product. Typical — great looking on the outside, mediocre junk on the inside.
#9 Jägermeister Thanks for asking.
You are correct.
For very high quality micro fibre synthetic bag leather one square meter is about $15 – $20 from the factory and the fabrication cost for a say a handbag is about a couple of dollars. For real high quality natural bag leather the cost is higher but not by much.
Prices for goods are related to the name and status not the cost. We took our European distributors (two Italians) out to see the sights in Shanghai last night and too many bottles of wine – and a nice Cuban which we are struggling to recover from.
We had a look at Plaza 66 which is all top drawer shops like LV and Gucci and we were remarking on how the cost for manufacture does not relate to price – you are only buying the name.
#10 The comment about “ironic oxymoron: a Chinese luxury product” is completely wrong. For one of the Italians this was their first time to Shanghai and he was completely with the impressed with what he saw what Chinese can do.
“great looking on the outside, mediocre junk on the inside” So Apple products only look great on the outside but it is mediocre junk on the inside? Where do you think all the ‘i’ stuff is made? Oh and 3 & 4 series BMWs as well…
Cheers (or maybe too many Cheers last night…)

True… it’s like MS Windows… What’s the actual cost for Windows… $5 per license?

And thanks for the insight! 🙂
